Lighthouse Bird by David Sparenberg

I am ok and will continue to be ok. I am not the center of the universe. Reality is peopled and diverse. But I am center of a circle of acts of beauty and cosmic awareness, and consequence.

How blessed I am to be one of the articulate; neither oppressed or intimidated into silence.  I am gifted with a voice.

You are ok and you will continue to be ok. You too are not center of the universe. Reality is peopled and diverse. But you are the center of a circle of acts of beauty and cosmic awareness, and consequence.

How do our circles interconnect?

Norman Cousins: A Pioneer of Track II Diplomacy by Rene Wadlow

World Citizen Norman Cousins (24 June 1915-30 November 1990) was a pioneer of Track II diplomacy. Track I is official government to government diplomacy among instructed representative of the State. Track II is a non-official effort, usually by a non-governmental organization (NGO) or an academic institution. Track II talks are discussions held by non-officials of conflicting parties in an attempt to clarify outstanding disputes and to explore the options for resolving them in settings that are less public or less sensitive than those associated with official negotiations.

Track II talks can also be defined by what they are not: neither academic conferences nor secret diplomacy conducted by government representatives. At a minimum, Track II talks are aimed at an exchange of views, perceptions and information between the parties to improve each side’s understanding of the other’s positions and policies. While Track II talks need not necessarily be linked to concurrent Track I negotiations, participants in Track II must have some relations with officials in their countries’ decision-making circles for such talks to be effective.

In Circle Mystic Blue by David Sparenberg

To heal the Earth into sustainable wellbeing we must heal ourselves; to heal ourselves
into sustainable wellbeing we must heal the Earth.

The healing process is a circle. It is not a vicious circle, with no way out but a circle of
evolution, perception, and of responsibility. With many, many interconnecting ways to delve in, with integrity and compassion, and to emerge outward., in compassion and integrity.  Playing a lifetime with the intricate origami of acts of beauty.

From space, Earth is soft in subtle pulsation like a gentle blue eye curious to see where it is, and the everywhere that surrounds this orbiting Gaia-sphere: evolution’s living, cosmic observatory.

The medicine prayer of our green generation if not for eternity but for global revolution. Nonviolent revolution. On Earth, as is dreamed from heaven: a gentle place of peace in circle mystic blue. Life thrives here.

Breakfast in London #poem by Dr. Lawrence Nannery

“Cappuccino, and post-coital cigarettes, and
The darting clatter of your perfect Parisian French.

Your mouth is a little bow.
Who could have made your pouting little lips just so?”

TRUTH IS RADICAL – a Prose Poem or Ecosophic Meditation by David Sparenberg

Look: Civilization ended in a post-midnight place named Auschwitz; with the terminal moment of anti-event, at the irreversible dropping of The Bomb on Hiroshima.  The ultimate supermall of death.  The ultimate militarization of ideological and scientific progress.

There has been, of course, throughout the history of human crime, much deception, betrayal, atrocity. Suffering has always been at its worst wherever presently afflicting. In the immediacy of traumatic experience, suffering is not a numbers game. And inhumanity has always, always been justified by power and complicity. And yet, on the diagram of the advancing psychosis of Apocalypse, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Hiroshima-Nagasaki, are Absolutes.  The standards of cruelty, horror, the civilizational terminus of life having any chance at recognized personal and interpersonal value.

And yet, and yet…sputtering and resuming since the end of civilization, we practice, we propagate, we go on. Continuing in the pretenses of illusions. Continuing to invest in the metaphors of rape. Pervasively covering up, trying to forget what should never be forgotten, struggling anxiously under the daily surface to remember what we chose not to remember.  Barely avoiding vertigo. Craving the drugs of artificial happiness to avoid the nothingness of the fallen, shattered image of a failing species.

Looking back over my shoulder by Abigail George

And when I began to write for English class Rob was always in the frame of my mind. I pictured him making his way through the papers, marking them in red pen and finally until he came across my paper in the bunch, there is where he would finally align his vision with mine.

At first glance perceptions are normality not borderline or bipolar. They’re usually just realities of light and energy. I felt an undeniable (yet also unattainable sense) of magic drawing in his dance of movement and on the contemporary as he made his way between the desks in the classroom. Memory, memory, memory could hurt the eyes, could pierce the heart away in tune to their own Hiroshima, could half-drown you in desire.

There between my pages he would find ministry, meaning, shielding me (and my secret forever) and standing solid at the same time behind my descriptive words. He made everything sound pretty and as fragile as words like climate change, global warming, ecosystem, and wetlands in class, where he stood magnificent and cold upfront in the class, reciting poetry out loud, completely detached from the reaction that was being raised in the crush of my schoolgirl heart. It had brought me much undisclosed joy to watch this adult male in my hemisphere. In my dreams we would have ‘conversations’. We would talk about books. My first choice had to be William Styron’s Sophie’s Choice. I could imagine reading some of his own work, praising him or telling him what to rework, blushing that I could be that brave.

The TRAGEDY of LEAR acts 3 thru 5 by David Sparenberg

He is an old man, truly a very old man, and the sudden crashing into splintered smallness of his life is playing out on a tightrope, a fraying tightrope, sawed at along a razor’s edge. Tense he is and dread-beset between vulnerable tears and collapse and imploding rage.

He is an old man clutching his palsy hands, with a broken heart, threatened by his mind becoming unhinged, wandering furiously, indignant but frightened by instability, without direction, without authority, devoid of purpose. Poignantly he fears this absence of authority, through which he formerly had ever shaped and defined his person, yet he is that which he fears, which he accuses himself and others, to the extent of accusing creation, of being complicit in the conspiracy of his overthrow: “Strike flat the thick rotundity o’ th’ world, crack natures moulds, all germains still at once.”

Although blind to much else, especially plotting resentment, envy and betrayal, yet he views himself as now he is, broken and breaking and being scattered about, “a man more sinned against that sinning.” No longer the high priest of power, the codger attends the descent into his nether kingdom. Increasingly out of focus, no longer commanding the spotlight, becoming obscure, a blot, a fallen man incensed, who is at war with blustering wind and buffeting rain, with the shadow he was accustomed to throwing, and the shadow he has lost now in his extremity of estrangement. Floundering. Wracked. A stranger to his former robes. The old man’s pain is molecular, cerebral, as well as spiritual.

Sir Richard Burton: A Gnostic Bridge to Asian Culture by Rene Wadlow

As Edward Rice stresses in his biography of Richard Burton, whose birth anniversary we mark on 19 March, “Burton’s adult life was passed in a ceaseless quest for the kind of secret knowledge he labeled broadly as ‘Gnosis’ by which he hoped to uncover the very source of existence and the meaning of his role on earth.”

Historically, the word ‘gnosis’ means knowledge, a certain interior, intuitive cognition, sometimes called ‘the gnosis of the heart’ by which the ‘awake’ individual is able to understand the transcendental presence within himself.  The mystical experience of the gnosis is most often set into myth and folk tales.  Burton believed that the same gnosis was in the background of all myths, and he studied Hindu Tantra, Sikhism and Kablalah but his most lasting interest was in Islamic Sufism.

I and THOU by David Sparenberg

I open my mind; we share our thoughts.  I open my mouth; we share our words. I open my heart; we share our human feelings of life.  I open my soul: here I am in the dynamic of becoming.  Before me is who you are, metamorphic in the mystic flow. Mystery between us in the unconscious; outwardly unfolding, we envision together. I and Thou.

The dream of freedom is as old as human time.  Freedom from want and fear.  Freedom from hurt and woe.  Freedom to become the “who” of being we each and everyone are endowed with power to become.  Freedom from and freedom for.  Not to be denigrated or to denigrate.  Not to be violated and not to violate.  Freedom as a form of social contract; freedom as a norm.

The dream of peace is as old as human sorrow.  We are Earth-walkers from horizon to horizon; from primal caverns to skyward summits.  We who are dreamers are called to awaken.  We who are lights against whirlwind and deception are called to be peacemakers: to make the dream of peace come true.

Robert Muller: Crossing Frontiers for Reconciliation by Rene Wadlow

Robert Muller, whose birth anniversary we mark on 11 March, was the former Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Social Service of the United Nations, and, after his retirement, he served as Honorary President of the Association of World Citizens.  He was brought up in Alsace-Lorraine still marked by the results of the First World War.   As a young man, he joined the French Resistance movement during the Second World War when Alsace-Lorraine had been re-annexed by Germany.  At the end of the War, he earned a Doctorate in Law and Economics at the University of Strasbourg. Strasbourg was to become the city symbolic of French-German reconciliation and is today home of the European Parliament.

Determined to work for peace having seen the destructive impact of war, he joined the United Nations Secretariat in 1948 where he worked primarily  on economic and social issues.  For many years, he was the Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.  His work with ECOSOC brought him into close contact with NGOs whose work he always encouraged

In 1970, he joined the cabinet of the then Secretary-General U Thant, who was Secretary-General from 1961 to 1971.   U Thant had a deep impact on the thinking of Robert Muller.  U Thant’s inner motivations were inspired by a holistic philosophy drawn from his understanding of Buddhism, by an intensive personal discipline and by a sense of compassions for humans.

Orcas & Bumblebees by David Sparenberg

The most nefarious act of murder is taking place.  It is ultimate hubris.  The ultimate of human violence.

Before all of our faces; everyone is a witness.  Not one of us is without a share of guilt. The human species is murdering the Earth.

We can no longer talk of ourselves as the crown of creation.  In our plastic world with fossil fuel combustion, we have become parasitic—ubiquitous destroyers. Every day, everyone is confronted with choices.

Go talk to waters, lands, the air and weather.  Speak with orcas and dying bumblebees.

Kuan Yin : She who harkens to the cries of the world Wise in using skilful means, She manifests her countless form by Rene Wadlow

May all living beings recognise others as part of the same family and so develop kindness towards all. May we contribute to peace in the world. May peace-loving people, East and West, accomplish their goals of joy and harmony in the world.

February 19 is the day, especially in Chinese culture to honour Kuan Yin: the Goddess of Mercy for the Taoists and the Bodhisattva of Compassion for the Buddhists. In Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is a person who has achieved enlightenment but who does not enter Nirvana but who returns to give guidence and protection to struggling humanity.

Shrines to Kuan Yin stand in many places in China and in several neighboring countries as well.  Whenever possible, these shrines are placed near running water or overlooking a lake.  She is often depicted by painters as seated on a rock gazining out across the water or standing on a floating lotus petel.

Three Sisters by David Sparenberg

Once there was a country couple.  They had one cow, no sons, but three daughters.  The girls were a bit of a blessings to their parents, while yet a bit more of a curse.

Throughout the county it was talked openly that one of the sisters had the shadow of the banshee on her face.  Another was as plain as plain could be; enough so that the family cow could not envy her any more than the curlew with its nest in the eaves of the weather-beaten cowshed out against the house.  The third of the girls was peculiar.

Here are the names of the siblings and you can understand how and why each had the name that she did.  One of the sisters was named One Eye, another Two Eyes and the other member of the trio Three Eyes.

I will tell you now how these children came into the world, although not in the order of their coming, for One Eye was the youngest, Three Eyes the eldest and Two Eyes, who was closest to being humanly normal, was the sister in between.

The Plunge Of Prometheus* by David Sparenberg

In an instant—fire! The fire surged unto eternity. Elementals perished amid flaming trees. The Keepers of Animals were consumed with the animals they could no longer protect. Insects with torched antennae and wingless butterflies stumbled, crumpled and died before tongues and mouths of voracious heat.

Even angels, with fiery wings resembling butterflies and feathered doves and dreams, felt terror and fled to the blackholes of oblivion in search of shelter. None but the Master of Fire remained to inherit absence and recolonize the burnt and lifeless land.

What too of the sea, not surging but sweating against the scorched rocks of shore? And what of God, dry-eyed in Heaven, who covered nostrils, lips and eyes, and torn his heart in half between titanic outrage and inconsolable pity?

A Modest Proposal: Let’s Rename the Christmas Season The Winter Saturnalia by Dr. Emanuel Paparella

Christmas carols, children playing and eating cookies, adults playing Christmas games and exchanging gifts around a chimney, Santa Claus traveling by sled from the North Pole to bring gifts, adults exchanging expensive and not so expensive gifts, angels singing, kings traveling via camels to come and visit an important arrival, lights and more lights galore. It’s a wonderful picturesque world vying with Walt Disney, for sure. How can anyone criticize it? Who is the kill-joy who would like to eliminate it, besides a Puritan? But there is a problem: it’s a misnomer.

This world of relief from the dreariness and darkness of winter solstice has been around from time immemorial. It was a genial way of mitigating the darkness and dreariness with light and merriment and some alcohol, of course, to lubricate the festivities and add to the general merriment. The Romans  has a name for those festivities, they called them The Saturnalia.

I suppose today we call it “Christmas season” but could that be a misnomer? Why do people celebrate with worship, prayer and meditation, besides dancing and frolicking? Could there be a meaning to the whole celebration? Perhaps the meaning can be gathered by reading a very short passage from the passage of St. John, which is read to every Christian congregation on Christmas eve in every Christian Church.

MAN WALKING an UNPAVED ROAD by David Sparenberg

Man walks along an unpaved road. His feet make rhythm—the rhythm of a human walking (a two legged, as sages say). His feet form patterns on the wending road—changes to micro-climates and eco-structures, tiny thunders below the level of human hearing, miniature, momentary, storms of dust, the crunch and shuffle of boulder-pebbles. With every footfall a metamorphic happening.

Man looks round about. This day is fair, a soft day, and he silently thanks the day for its gentle kindness. No rain is hammering, wind is not rough, sun does not burn. Man looks round about, turning full circle to take his surroundings in: everywhere, encircling, he sees beauty, calm, beauty and life, filling place with the lushness of grass, in beadwork industry of ant hills, with scurrying of field mice at a glance and digging out of emerging, penny-weight shrews.

An energy of appreciation wells inside of man. He feels it upsurge and grow and swell in his chest, his throat; his hands like burning cauldrons of body-fire, a blush of blood-warmth coloring his cheeks. How can he contain this heat? He cannot! He is human.

YESHUA by David Sparenberg

Standing in the hush of the nave, I looked at him.  The gentle beauty of his face all but ruined by extraordinary suffering, the long enduring of extreme pain.  His large, dark, emotionally expressive eyes penetrated flesh and bone.

Words fail before what humbles the soul and leaves a witness forever questioning.  It is difficult beyond reason to be before a survivor of atrocity and to know what could, what should, what can be said, and what cannot.

Somehow, I found voice and asked, “After so much is taken, so many seeking to be excused from themselves, expecting a miracle, what is your need?  What do you hope for, or should I say, what is your prayer?”

Ovi magazine; Sunday September 18th, 2022 – International Equal Pay Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Sunday September 18th, 2022 – International Equal Pay Day

International Equal Pay Day, celebrated on 18 September, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. It further builds on the United Nations’ commitment to human rights and against all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against women and girls.

Across all regions, women are paid less than men, with the gender pay gap estimated at around 20 per cent globally. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls continue to be held back owing to the persistence of historical and structural unequal power relations between women and men, poverty and inequalities and disadvantages in access to resources and opportunities that limit women’s and girls’ capabilities. Progress on narrowing that gap has been slow. While equal pay for men and women has been widely endorsed, applying it in practice has been difficult.

Of stars and hands #ShortStory #Fiction by Abigail George

Carol was my mother’s sister. She was the oldest. Mr Vincent Rhodes was an only child, Carol’s son. When you live with manic depression you live both a life and a half-life. On the one hand, you live with your stone voice just as well as you do with the mask of deceit and deception. You all are my greatest happiness. If my mother has never known that, then if she reads these words she will know that now. She is my wish fulfilment. Memory is touch and glory. Memory is a glass ceiling, rock, paper, and scissors. It is I who permits my mind to feel. Permits it to feel the tracks of sadness like rain. The heavens opening up to meet me. I’ve learned that you are never prepared for wisdom. To keep my senses alive I must watch you, dance within your blind reach mum. Your village ravishes me. You’re everywhere. Your summer mouth. My soul mourns in dreams. My soul speaks to me in fragments of silence. I cannot change what I am. It is only at the end of the world when we realise what the meaning of betrayal is, decay, death, and solitude. It dies with us the same way our instinct does. My mother plays the piano in the morning. I can see where all her focus is streamlined to the page in front of her. Once I could decipher those notes but that is when I was a child. Our love is intense. Does she know that I would die for her? That I, I would die a succession of deaths for her. You’re emptiness and instant. To me my mother is spontaneity. Gossip never scratched the surface of ears, lips, teeth in our house.

The Next Phase by David Sparenberg

The process of individualization is the current phase of human evolution.  This phase began to democratize at the European Renaissance.  Now it wanes.  The two World Wars increased the scale of human targeting—in state terrorism, suffering and annihilation.  Auschwitz was the terminus of civilization; the atomic atrocities of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, warnings against omnicide.  The largess of human personality vanishes.  Environmental consequences of modern warfare are scarcely spoken of.  We continue in systems of falsification and exploitation and a culture of excesses and violence.

What is wordless is unthinkable.  When naming happens the named is open to endless communication.

The next phase of human evolution is the transformation of ego-self into eco-self.  In core dynamics this shift involves turning the long journey into the interior outward to geo-biotic relationships and in dialectic alternations between reaching deeply into the past of origins and moving conditionally into an Ecosophic Future.
