The Nature And Power Of Intent by Jan Sand
There is a good deal of astronomical activity these days to search for life beyond what we know on this planet . At this time there is no positive evidence of extra-terrestrial life apparent. One of the fundamental difficulties remains our lack of a clear definition of exactly what life is, so the search generally has been a search for planets very much like our planet Earth containing liquid water and oxygen and a temperature range that we prefer.
Ideally we would desire to contact intelligent life with a technology somewhat similar to what we posses. Since planets beyond those in our solar system orbit stars so far away, contact through some form of electromagnetic radiation is restricted to the speed of light, which is desperately slow for interstellar communication. Nothing else seems available at the moment so intellectual exchange presents vast difficulties and we are left with intellectual speculation until something definite appears.
Perhaps it is worthwhile to return to basics and examine the fundamentals of what makes something alive and how it differs fundamentally from something not alive. All life requires a source of energy. It uses this energy to maintain a system which processes whatever is available to keep the system in operation and to manufacture either duplicates of itself or very similar systems that are better adjusted to mate with the environment which varies in ways that are frequently unpredictable.

The global gates of discrimination and the silent generation by Thanos Kalamidas
It was random but the same time it all happened the same week. US Supreme Court seems ready to back a web designer opposed to same-sex marriage; Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill that expands a ban on so-called LGBTQ “propaganda” in Russia and the Indonesian parliament unanimously passed a sweeping new criminal code that criminalizes sex outside marriage. Totally unrelated, still totally related; and all in cue with the termination of the “Roe v Wade” protection of the abortions in USA.
In the meantime Ron DeSantis keep building his anti-gay walls in Florida, Poland is preparing a law that absolutely forbids abortions in violation of the EU laws, Uganda bans all LGBTQ rights groups and Qatar during the World Cup …bans every freedom and right for everybody with the exception of the royal family. Shockingly, in South Africa a bar forbids the entrance of black people if they are not …accompanied by a white person!
Nonetheless, this is just the peak of the iceberg. Human rights, women rights, equality rights, are under attack in every single corner of this planet. From Colombia to Japan and from South Africa to Russia. And there is a ‘shining’ star for all that, a star that somehow paves the way for the rest; USA. The United States of America have the power to influence negative evolution even with their absence. Donald Trump’s repulsion of the US constitution and the January 6th Capital Hill attack has inspired a group of a coup plotters in Germany, SCOTUS cancellation f Roe v Wade has set the blueprint for whole nations and Ron DeSantis definitely gives an alibi to Vladimir Putin’s homophobia.

Anniversary of the Genocide Convention: 9 December 1948 by Rene Wadlow
Genocide is the most extreme consequence of racial discrimination and ethnic hatred. Genocide has as its aim the destruction, wholly or in part, of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such. The term was proposed by the legal scholar Raphael Lemkin, drawing on the Greek genos (people or tribe) and the Latin cide (to kill).(1) The policies and war crimes of the Nazi German government were foremost on the minds of those who drafted the Genocide Convention, but the policy was not limited to the Nazi. (2)
The Genocide Convention is a landmark in the efforts to develop a system of universally accepted standards which promote an equitable world order for all members of the human family to live in dignity. Four articles are at the heart of this Convention and are here quoted in full to understand the process of implementation proposed by the Association of World Citizens, especially of the need for an improved early warning system.

Every year, on 1 December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. People around the world unite to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS. The inequalities which perpetuate the AIDS pandemic are not inevitable; we can tackle them. This World AIDS Day, UNAIDS is urging each of us to address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS. The “Equalize” slogan is a call to action. It is a prompt for all of us to work for the proven practical actions needed to address inequalities and help end AIDS.
Just Suppose… by Jan Sand
When I was a kid, back in the early 1930’s, there wasn’t a hell of a lot of well conceived good science fiction around. Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs took a stab at it but the only writer that impressed me was H.G.Wells with his time machine and “War Of The Worlds”. That still reads pretty well but we now know enough about the planet Mars to understand it contains no threats.
Nevertheless the idea that an alien invasion from elsewhere in the universe has been explored thoroughly in later fiction is obvious. The better attempts such as Heinlein’s “The Puppet Masters”, John Campbell’s “Who Goes There?”, and Jack Finney’s “The Body Snatchers” involved alien life forms with biological qualities that avoided open conflict such as inter-species warfare.
If an alien civilization from outside the solar system took a fancy to our planet Earth, I have often wondered just how it might go about taking possession of the planet without the presumed brutal conflict with the current human controlling species. No doubt, there would be methods well developed in the long history of its interstellar civilization that has become standardized.

MAN WALKING an UNPAVED ROAD by David Sparenberg
Man walks along an unpaved road. His feet make rhythm—the rhythm of a human walking (a two legged, as sages say). His feet form patterns on the wending road—changes to micro-climates and eco-structures, tiny thunders below the level of human hearing, miniature, momentary, storms of dust, the crunch and shuffle of boulder-pebbles. With every footfall a metamorphic happening.
Man looks round about. This day is fair, a soft day, and he silently thanks the day for its gentle kindness. No rain is hammering, wind is not rough, sun does not burn. Man looks round about, turning full circle to take his surroundings in: everywhere, encircling, he sees beauty, calm, beauty and life, filling place with the lushness of grass, in beadwork industry of ant hills, with scurrying of field mice at a glance and digging out of emerging, penny-weight shrews.
An energy of appreciation wells inside of man. He feels it upsurge and grow and swell in his chest, his throat; his hands like burning cauldrons of body-fire, a blush of blood-warmth coloring his cheeks. How can he contain this heat? He cannot! He is human.

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.
Universal Children’s Day by Rene Wadlow
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 20 November as Universal Chlidren’s Day, a day devoted to promoting the welfare of the children of the world. The date of 20 November was chosen as it is the anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The Convention, which is the most widely ratifies international human rights treaty sets out a number of children’s rights including the right to life, to health, to education and to family life.
When the Convention on the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 November 1989, governments took a major step forward in establishing a framework of world law to protect the basic dignity and rights of children in all parts of the world. Thus, we remember with gratitude those who worked to develop the concepts and reality of the Rights of the Child but also to measure the tasks that are before us, especially as members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This universal framework is based on the principle that each child should have the possibility to develop into an active and responsible member of society. The way in which a society treats its children reflects not only its qualities of compassion and protective caring, but also its sense of justice, its commitment to the future and its urge to better the human condition for continuing generations.

Words and Pictures #thoughts by Jan Sand
Noam Chomsky, who is one of the most recognized experts on the nature of language, estimates that human language began about twenty thousand years ago. I am guessing this estimate is based on written language which is rather different from communication vocally. Although the paintings discovered in caves have been estimated to be created about forty thousand years ago the quality of the pictures compares well with the efforts of current artists and the depiction of animals is as wonderful as the best of modern efforts. I have personal doubts that the artists making these exquisite depictions merely grunted at each other.
Both words and pictures are a product of the human mind to abstract and formulate individual qualities from sense input but visual imagery seems much closer to what might be called reality than what can be done with words. The simple description “The tall man in the peculiar hat” evokes a completely different image from “The large rabbit in the top hat” not only because the individual words are used differently but someone reading the phrase from different cultures or varied eras also would get a totally different image. Pictures are somewhat less limited.
