Remembering Srebrenica by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

The 11th of July is a dark reminder of man’s inhumanity. Twenty-eight years ago, and some fifty years after the world had said “Never Again” to the horrors of the Holocaust, Europe allowed the genocide of another minority community on its soil. In Bosnia, between 1992-1995 close to 100,000 people were killed, over 2 million were forcibly displaced, and between 20,000-50,000 women were raped as part of the systematic campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing enacted by the Serb forces.

The name Srebrenica has become synonymous with those dark days in July 1995 whenmore than eight thousand men and boys (and dozens of women) were systematically murdered and buried in mass graves. The victims –all Muslims from an infant of couple hours to a 94-year-oldwoman – were selected for extermination because of their religious identity. This was the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

The clock besides me #poem & #painting by Amir Khatib

“The clock was ticking,
and I would stroll beside her;
she strolls by the river,
Walking on the water:
speed up,
stumble,
gurgle between,
Flowing,
disappear…”

Ovi magazine; Tuesday February 14th, 2023 – Valentine’s Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Tuesday February 14th, 2023 – Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

The Gujarat Genocide – Revisited by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

Twenty years ago, the Gujarat genocide happened. The victims were the state’s Muslim minorities who were denied any protection by the state police. The Hindu organizations responsible for planning and executing the genocide are the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Bajrang Dal, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) collectively form the Sangh Parivar.

I share below some background information on these parties which will help our readers to better grasp the problem discussed.

The RSS was founded in the city of Nagpur in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar with the mission of creating a Hindu state. Since its founding, it has propagated a militant form of Hindu nationalism, called Hindutva, which it promotes as the sole basis for national identity in India. Western thought and civilization are perceived as enemies of Hindu culture. Religions such as Islam and Christianity are seen as the religions of foreign invaders―the Mughals and the British. The RSS wanted “the entire gamut of social life” to be designed “on the rock bed of Hindu nationalism,” a goal that inspired the creation of RSS political, social, and educational wings, a family of organizations that is now referred to collectively as the SanghParivar.

The global gates of discrimination and the silent generation by Thanos Kalamidas

It was random but the same time it all happened the same week. US Supreme Court seems ready to back a web designer opposed to same-sex marriage; Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill that expands a ban on so-called LGBTQ “propaganda” in Russia and the Indonesian parliament unanimously passed a sweeping new criminal code that criminalizes sex outside marriage. Totally unrelated, still totally related; and all in cue with the termination of the “Roe v Wade” protection of the abortions in USA.

In the meantime Ron DeSantis keep building his anti-gay walls in Florida, Poland is preparing a law that absolutely forbids abortions in violation of the EU laws, Uganda bans all LGBTQ rights groups and Qatar during the World Cup  …bans every freedom and right for everybody with the exception of the royal family. Shockingly, in South Africa a bar forbids the entrance of black people if they are not …accompanied by a white person!

Nonetheless, this is just the peak of the iceberg. Human rights, women rights, equality rights, are under attack in every single corner of this planet. From Colombia to Japan and from South Africa to Russia. And there is a ‘shining’ star for all that, a star that somehow paves the way for the rest; USA. The United States of America have the power to influence negative evolution even with their absence. Donald Trump’s repulsion of the US constitution and the January 6th Capital Hill attack has inspired a group of a coup plotters in Germany, SCOTUS cancellation f Roe v Wade has set the blueprint for whole nations and Ron DeSantis definitely gives an alibi to Vladimir Putin’s homophobia.

Anniversary of the Genocide Convention: 9 December 1948 by Rene Wadlow

Genocide is the most extreme consequence of racial discrimination and ethnic hatred. Genocide has as its aim the destruction, wholly or in part, of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such.  The term was proposed by the legal scholar Raphael Lemkin, drawing on the Greek genos (people or tribe) and the Latin cide (to kill).(1)  The policies and war crimes of the Nazi German government were foremost on the minds of those who drafted the Genocide Convention, but the policy was not limited to the Nazi. (2)

The Genocide Convention is a landmark in the efforts to develop a system of universally accepted standards which promote an equitable world order for all members of the human family to live in dignity.  Four articles are at the heart of this Convention and are here quoted in full to understand the process of implementation proposed by the Association of World Citizens, especially of the need for an improved early warning system.

International Accountability: Myanmar, the ICJ and the Genocide Question by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

The indomitable spirit of Raphael Lemkin, bibliophile, assiduous documenter of humanity’s dark deeds and inexecrable conduct, is bound to be an unsettled one.  This brilliant, committed and peculiarly dedicated creature took years to come up with what would, in time, become a word so horrifying as to transfix judges of international law.  The amalgam word of genocide stalks the conscience of state leaders, commanders and politicians, an insidious reminder of the inner prejudice that becomes a murderous plan, a design, a means of ridding one of enemies and counterparts.

Given the nature of international institutions, often weak and onerously bureaucratic, there are other aspects to the system of holding the genocidaire-types to account: inadvertent immunity for the perpetrators; the obstructions and impediments of governments; and the reluctance of even using the term to describe abuses.

My name #poem by Amir Khatib

“Finally they were able to replace my idle hand with a solid iron hand,

He does not expect me to do this, but a human,
I can punch Mustafa Al-Kazemi and break his jaw,
To stop lying and ranting about patriotism”

Europe must be wise and prevent an all-out war in #Ukraine by Christos Mouzeviris

The conflict in Ukraine is not recent. In fact, it has been going on for more than 7 years now, mounting to a loss of life in the thousands; around 13,200 people were killed in the conflict, about 3,350 of them civilians, as of today. It is evident that this war won’t stop, unless there is a decisive action, or the will by all sides involved to end it. So if the Russians have indeed plans to terminate it by invading, it will be Pyrrhic Victory for everyone no doubt.

I have written many articles on Ukraine in the past, so I will try not to repeat myself. I feel for the Ukrainian people, because their land is a territory that is being “pissed on by the big dogs of the world”, in order to mark their territory and sphere of influence. Who are these dogs? In one hand is Russia of course and USA on the other, with Europe being America’s little poodle, siding always with its big brother or master. To me both sides are on the wrong, and Ukraine’s population pays the price.

Turkey kills 150 Kurdish

Turkish air strikes in northern Iraq this week left more than 150 Kurdish rebels dead, the Turkish army says.

"According to initial estimates, this operation allowed us to neutralize more than 150 terrorists," the army said in a statement on its website. A PKK spokesman said that only six rebels were killed and they were from a different faction.

Turkey has staged several cross-border raids into northern Iraq over the past few months in pursuit of the rebels. The strikes, which began on Thursday and ended on Friday, were carried out against PKK guerrillas based in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq, the Turkish army says.

All targeted posts in Qandil area were destroyed during the operation, according to the Turkish army's statement. But a PKK spokesman, Ahmed Danees, told the Reuters news agency only six rebels died and they were from a faction fighting against Iran.

Turkey is building up more genocide! It was the Armenian now it is the Kurds!!! Who knows how many innocent have died from the Turkish bombs and shootings the last years from innocent Kurds who only ask for their freedom?
