The Moral Bankruptcy of the ‘Amen Corner’ by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

The third Republican presidential debate once again showed the ugly side of the Republican candidates. When the rest of the world, including millions of Americans here in the US, are appalled by the brutality of the Israeli Occupation Forces in Gaza and condemning the apartheid state, these individuals were in a competition to score and prove their naked support for its ongoing  genocidal crimes.

“I’d be telling Bibi: Finish the job once and for all with these butchers,” Florida Governor DeSantis said, referring to the Israeli prime minister by his nickname.

“The first thing I said to him when it happened was, I said, ‘Finish them (the Palestinians),’” former US Ambassador Haley said moments later.

An Open Letter to President Biden by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

Mr. President,
More than 20 years ago, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old  American peace activist, was killed in Rafah by an American-made, Israeli-owned Caterpillar bulldozer. Her crime: she protested a demolition campaign by the occupying Israeli government that destroyed over a thousand in the Gaza Strip.

In a letter sent to her family from Gaza, Corrie described the Palestinian suffering she had witnessed. “No amount of reading, attendance at conferences, documentary viewing and word-of-mouth could have prepared me for the reality of the situation here,” she wrote. “You just can’t imagine it unless you see it.”

In another letter she wrote, “I’m witnessing this chronic, insidious genocide and I’m really scared, and questioning my fundamental belief in the goodness of human nature.”

Desertification Decade Ends: Challenges Remain by Rene Wadlow

The U.N. General Assembly had proclaimed an International Decade on Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification (2010-2020).  The aim of the Decade was to promote efforts to arrest the spread of deserts and desert-like conditions worldwide.

Desertification is a plague which upsets the traditional balance between people and the socio-economic system by which they live.  Because desertification disturbs a region’s natural resource base, desertification leads to insecurity and in some cases to violence.  The violence in Darfur province of Sudan and in the Sahel states of West Africa is largely linked to the persistent drought and the advance of the desert.

President Biden, Please, Drop the Charade by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

As millions of people have poured onto the streets around the world in support of the Palestinian people as Israel Defense Force (IDF) pounds Gaza non-stop since the surprise attack of the Hamas inside Israel, the western powers, led by the US, have come to show their unrelenting support for the murderous apartheid state of Israel.

In this war, truth has once again been twisted to justify the genocidal crimes of the Netanyahu government. The US president Joe Biden did not waste any time to voice America’s support for war crimes of Netanyahu. He called Hamas’s attack on Israel “pure unadulterated evil,” as he vowed, “We stand with Israel.””We’ll make sure Israel has what it needs to take care of itself,” Biden said from the White House.

“I never really thought that I would see, have confirmed, pictures of terrorists beheading children,” said Biden, who described attack as the “deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust”.

Rohingya of the Arakan: Conflict, Crisis and Solutions by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

The Rohingyas of Myanmarare a stateless people who are denied citizenship rights intheBuddhist-majority Myanmarsimply because of their distinct ‘otherness’ in race, culture, and religion. As a result, nearly 2.5 million Rohingyas, representing roughly 75% of the community, now live as refugees in various parts of our world. Those living inside Myanmar are treated as an unwanted people who are victims of genocide. Not a single Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is honored by the government, which has rendered the Rohingya the most persecuted people of our time.

In itsstrategic goal towardsmakingthe multi-racial and -religious Myanmar “pure and clean” for its Buddhist majority people only, thesuccessive Myanmargovernments – civilian and military alike –have been guilty ofnot only falsifying history but also of using a combination of tactical measures that include inter alia extermination, destruction, torture, eviction, and rape against the targeted Rohingyas, who are mostly Muslim.

Soft roots #poem & #painting by Amir Khatib

South Asia is endangered when the ‘unholy’ realities in today’s India is ignored by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

Jyoti Rahman’s (JR) article “An Unholy Omen Is Looming Over Bangladesh”, published in The Wire, was brought to my attention by a retired academic. This article, although well written, suffers from too many theatrics, flaws, and exaggeration.

Writing about the birth of Pakistan on August 14, 1947, JRstates, “That country became an Islamic Republic. Hindus were not equal citizens there. They were dhimmis under the ‘sacred protection’ of the majority.”

First of all, Pakistan became an Islamic Republic only after 1956 when the constitution of 1956 was adopted, and there, too, there was no mention of the so-called ‘Dhimmis’ (lit. protected ones). As we all know too well, the naming did not change the secular character of the new government outside the office of the head of the state, which was to be held only by a Muslim. (Let’s not forget that in the last 76 years, India did not produce a single Muslim Prime Minister despite its parliamentary form of government.)
