Malaysia: increasing restrictions on press freedom by Murray Hunter

With Malaysia’s huge leap of 40 places on the World Press Freedom Index earlier this year, the Fahmi Fadzil, the Communication and Multimedia Minister in the new Anwar Ibrahim government boasted of the administration’s commitment to media freedom and a good atmosphere for journalists.

Malaysia had jumped an unprecedented 40 places in the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index, being ranked 73 out of 180 countries, the best in the region. Malaysia under previous administrations had a reputation for prosecuting journalists and activists, forcing them to incur massive legal expenses and possible bankruptcies. The police often carried out searches of media outlets, and expelled foreign journalists, who were critical of the government.

Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim went on record saying that “journalists in the country should feel free to report the news in the new era if it involves criticizing the prime minister and the leadership”.

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems, the thoughts, the reviews, the photos, the paintings and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Monday November 20th, 2023 – Universal Children’s Day

Universal Children’s Day by Rene Wadlow

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 20 November as Universal Chlidren’s Day, a day devoted to promoting the welfare of the children of the world.  The date of 20 November was chosen as it is the anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.  The Convention, which is the most widely ratifies international human rights treaty sets out a number of children’s rights including the right to life, to health, to education and to family life.

When the Convention on the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 November 1989, governments took a major step forward in establishing a framework of world law to protect the basic dignity and rights of children in all parts of the world.  Thus, we remember with gratitude those who worked to develop the concepts and reality of the Rights of the Child but also to measure the tasks that are before us, especially as members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).  This universal framework is based on the principle that each child should have the possibility to develop into an active and responsible member of society. The way in which a society treats its children reflects not only its qualities of compassion and protective caring, but also its sense of justice, its commitment to the future and its urge to better the human condition for continuing generations.

Life crowded with details #poem & #painting by Amir Khatib

“Your life is always crowded with details.
There is no time to remember…
Memories attack the mind when it is empty.
A torrent descends towards abandoned hearts,
My teacher said: “Man, insofar as he is a part of nature,
be part of its destiny.”

History in the Making by Abigail George

“If a story must be told about our love then let it be a story about sibling rivalry, unconditional love and the powers that be.”
“Who is going to tell that story?”
“The children who are going to be born in our future.”
“Don’t forget brother. We are children of the revolution.”
“How could I forget that our father taught us about operations and strategy from an early age, my beloved sister.”

“Husband, which of our children have you decided upon to head up operations? Gail is wise beyond her years but Derek is the prodigal.”
“Wife, I have to choose carefully.”
“Understand, we can lose both of them if we sacrifice everything.”

Hamas-Israel Conflict: No Good-Faith Negotiations in Sight by Rene Wadlow

With Israeli armed forces deep inside the city of Gaza and air attacks on other areas of the Gaza Strip, negotiations on a longer-range peace settlement seem far off.  Even negotiations for a cease-fire are not advancing although more and more governments and non-governmental organizations are calling for such a cease-fire.

There has been an agreement with the Israeli military for a daily four hour “humanitarian pause” so that people can move from north to south within the Gaza Strip and some supplies from Egypt to enter.  However, even this agreement seems uncertain.  There are unconfirmed negotiations among representatives of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Qatari officials for the release of some of the 240 hostages held by Hamas.  Some of the Hamas leadership live in Qatar.

Against All Odds: The Life And Times Of Bessie Head by Abigail George

When Bessie was 12, after she had completed four years of primary school, the authorities moved her to St. Monica’s Home for Coloured Girls, an Anglican boarding-school in Durban. At first, Bessie tried to run away and go home. Later, she began to appreciate the wealth of books and knowledge that the school offered. At the end of her second year, she endured the first great trauma of her life. The authorities abruptly told her that she was the daughter of a white woman, not Nelly Heathcote, and that she would not be allowed to return to her former home for the Christmas holidays. The young teenager was devastated and withdrew into herself.

Around 1969, Head also began to suffer symptoms of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Many of Bessie Head’s works are set in Serowe, including the novels When Rain Clouds Gather (1968), Maru (1971), and A Question of Power (1973). The three are also autobiographical. When Rain Clouds Gather is based on her experience living on a development farm, Maru incorporates her experience of being considered racially inferior, and A Question of Power draws on her understanding of what it was like to experience acute psychological distress.

Making Basic Needs Operational in Development Planning by Rene Wadlow

The Basic Needs approach to development planning and mobilization has many early “fathers”. One was Mahatma Gandhi.  His approach may be described as action oriented (the environment of domination and oppression was his laboratory), normative (the welfare of the poorest was his standard) and global (a non-violent world society was his ultimate goal).

A second “father” coming from humanistic psychology and the human potential movement is Abraham Maslow, who died in 1970. His book ‘Toward A Psychology of Being’ and his later ‘The Farther Reaches of Human Nature’ develop his concept of the hierarchy of needs and the concepts of “self-actualization” and “peak experiences”

War on Gaza: Humanity is being Destroyed by Madness of War and Inept Leadership by Dr. Mahboob A. Khawaja

The raging war on Gaza and 2.2 million people are at the risk of being massacred by the advancing vengeful Israeli forces while the world is simply watching the “dramatization of war” as a spectator. The UN General Assembly Resolution (10/27/23) calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between the warring parties and continuing humanitarian assistance of basic necessities to the beleaguered masses in Gaza. The US and Israel seem to disregard the moral force of the UNGA member’s resolve for normalcy and peace. When people and nations live in darkness, they lose sense of moral and intellectual direction and priorities. Who else would know and understand better than the Jewish people subjugated and discriminated by Europeans for centuries and ultimately the victims of Holocaust. Ironically, Israeli political hubs view the Palestinians as less than human beings and the politicians called them “human animals.” To enforce this image, American policy makers and some West European are complicit in dehumanization of the people of Palestine. Are we heading towards similar catastrophic disasters as happened during the Two WW?

Protected only by his heart #poem & #painting by Amir Khatib

“I am a man protected only by his heart;
A heart trained long,
Until there was nothing in life that frightened or burdened him,
It’s an absurd question to know what’s next…
But I say to myself: No one else has betrayed me.
And no one knows,
Not even me,
When does that happen,
And he leaves me alone in the final answer…”

The emojis say it all by Dr Elsa Lycias Joel

Thanks to my mom who made sure I learnt Bharatanatyam for a decade or so. She gave a damn whether I liked it or enjoyed it. That is why, by looking at my face, people around me decoded the tone of the message I was typing and the one reading it read my mind just the way I wanted them to. My facial expressions never matched the emojis I typed into my phone. Emojis looked dumb beside the list of adjectives I used to express nuances of joy, contempt, disappointment and what not! Not only did I Invent my own jargon by mixing and matching words in the dictionary to express my emotions, I somehow managed to convince and teach the meanings to all those in my close friends list. All the jargon and slang I created stopped seemingly enough once the emojis crept in.

Soon after I mastered the use of emoticons, emojis peeped out from everywhere. These yellow faces look like they pose major challenges to the durability of words as such. Gen Z flaunt their emoji using skills with elan. What a great goal in life! At times, I use emojis just the way I like much to the disappointment of many, especially the Gen Z who pretend to have a thorough knowledge of 3,500 of them. As for me, using emojis seemed effortless because I cared not to read and by heart which one of them conveyed what emotion. That could be one reason behind my friends’ inability to understand my messages that packed so much insight, so much intellect. Over a period of time, my truly masterly analysis on complexities that emerge when words and emojis clash with emotions in the absence of emoji knowledge were ignored. It was arduous to research on why a handful did not take it all so light. Texting a GenZ is somewhat like the girl with the curl-great when the going is good but can sometimes be awful.

Women as Peacemakers by Rene Wadlow

October 31 is the anniversary of  the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1325 which calls for full and equal participation of women in conflict prevention, peace processes, and peace-building, thus creating opportunities for women to become fully involved in governance and leadership. This historic Security Council resolution 1325 of 31 October 2000 provides a mandate to incorporate gender perspectives in all areas of peace support.  Its adoption is part of a process within the UN system through its World Conferences on Women in Mexico City (1975), in Copenhagen (1980), in Nairobi (1985), in Beijing (1995), and at a special session of the U.N. General Assembly to study progress five years after Beijing (2000).

Since  2000, there have been no radical changes as a result of Resolution 1325, but the goal has been articulated and accepted. Now women must learn to take hold of and generate political power if they are to gain an equal role in peace-making. They must be willing to try new avenues and new approaches as symbolized by the actions of Lysistrata.

The Day Guterres Became Relevant by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

The relevance given to a UN Secretary-General is often judged by the degree of controversy caused.  In history, the most relevant are usually targeted.  Dag Hammarskjöld, refusing to remain a mere bauble of international office, was almost certainly murdered over his intervention in the Congo civil war in 1961.The least relevant (who was that sweet little fella, Ban Ki-Moon?) have barely registered a note of dissent.  The big powers like to know they can render such figures impotent, if not insignificant.

It was, for that reason, refreshing to see the current occupant of that post make the less than startling remark that the atrocious attacks of October 7 staged by Hamas and Islamic Jihad on Israeli soilcould not be seen as standalone acts of individual, unprovoked outrage.António Guterres was careful to also note that there was “nothing” that could “justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians, or the launching of rockets against civilian targets”.

Michael Servetus: To Kill A Man Does Not Defend An Idea by Rene Wadlow

27 October is a time to mark the impact of the United Nations 1981 Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief.  Freedom of conscience necessitates international protection as seen by a world history of persecution and intolerance.  At a time when there is increasing sectarian violence, it is useful to mark the milestones on the long road to freedom of conscience.

27 October 1553 was such a milestone, even if at the time it was more an example of fear of diversity of views and narrow intolerance, for 27 October was the day Michael Servetus was burned at the stake on a hill outside the walls of the Republic of Geneva. His crimes were heresy and blasphemy.  He had faced a long trial and examination of his ideas.  The intellectual prosecution was led by Jean Calvin, the leading Protestant thinker in Geneva along with his close associate Theodore de Bese, Rector of what later became the University of Geneva and second only to Calvin in his influence on religious thought in the city.  The analysis of the trial along with Servetus’ comments was sent to the other leading Protestant churches in Switzerland for their views.

Life sans social networks by Dr Elsa Lycias Joel

There was a time when there were no social networks to tether people. It was in the absence of texts, emojis, emails and real conversations that people were able to appreciate the depth of love they felt. The outside world remained outside of people’s lives. Knowing people, falling in love, being in a relationship, securing a job, going on a trip  were not posted on ‘walls’ for all to scroll through.

Talk about phones. There existed just a landline that rang once in a blue moon because many others didn’t own a phone to call you. No voice mail, no caller ID to help people take note of missed calls and return them. The long wait after booking a trunk call made conversations good enough. We had enough time to travel back and reminisce to make our conversation long enough to express ourselves and short enough to strengthen the bond.

A few problems with the higher education curriculum by Joseph Gatt

University studies, well into the 2000s, were designed mostly to train employees for big business and government positions. That is, until the late 2000s, you didn’t need to go to college if you wanted to create a small business or work in some kind of secretarial position.

Since the 2008 recession, the prevalent discourse in universities around the world has been to tell college students “get out there are start your own business and become a global leader! Be the next Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg!”

Problem is: the business studies curriculum at the university level is one that trains dark-suited corporate stooges, not business owners.

Nagorno-Karabakh: Armenian Exodus by Rene Wadlow

After the 19 September 2023 attacks of the Azari military on the Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh and the 20 September surrender of the Armenian forces in the enclave, called by the Armenians the Republic of Artsakh, a chapter of the conflict begun in 1988 as the Soviet Union was disintegrating was closed.

In 1988, the human rights defenders in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia were playing an increasing positive and self-disciplined role.  They had become not only defenders of the rights of Armenians, but also a vanguard force in the struggle for perestroika and therefore an example to other republics within the USSR.  The Nagorno-Karabakh activists became the forefront of a coherent grassroots movement for constitutional rights, meaningful elections, freedom of the press, and other democratic structures.  As their work became more effective, there was repression against them until the disintegration of the USSR.
