Ovi magazine; Thursday February 2nd, 2023 – World Wetlands Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Thursday February 2nd, 2023 – World Wetlands Day

Wetlands are ecosystems where water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. A broad definition of wetlands includes both freshwater and marine and coastal ecosystems such as all lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas and tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, coral reefs, and all human-made sites such as fishponds, rice paddies, reservoirs and saltpans.

These lands are critical to people and nature, given the intrinsic value of these ecosystems, and their benefits and services, including their environmental, climate, ecological, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic contributions to sustainable development and human wellbeing.

Tensions in the Asian Trinity: China – Japan – U.S.A. by Rene Wadlow

After five years of growing tensions among China Japan and the U.S.A., U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will make an official visit to Beijing on 5-6 February 2023.

There is a long list of possible issues to discuss although the list of common actions may be much shorter.  Probably at the head of the list is the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its geopolitical and economic impact.  There follows the status of Taiwan.  Some have made a parallel between the Russian intervention in Ukraine  and a possible attack on Taiwan. Russian difficulties in Ukraine have no doubt been discussed in Beijing, and the parallel discarded.  The role of North Korea and its military potential is a concern to China, to the U.S.A. and also Japan.  The economic ties of North Korea to China as well as relations between North and South Korea is as aspect of the same Korean issue.  The dramatic growth of Japanese government investment in the military and security sector, no doubt related to its view of Chinese power, will be an aspect of the China-U.S.A. talks. A full two days is ahead of the delegations.

Tensions among China, Japan, and the U.S.A. in the 1930s led to the Asian theatre of World War Two at the start of the 1940s.  The war transformed the three countries helping to bring the Communists to power in China, re-structuring power and economic relations within Japan, and establishing the United States as a world power ready and willing to play an active role in world politics.  Events in Asia led to the start of the Cold War and even a “Hot War” as the 1950 War in Korea started.

The Raider Spirit: The Unveiling of the B-21 by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

The US military industrial complex has made news with another eye-wateringly expensive product, a near totemic tribute to waste in a time of crisis.  The $700 million B-21 Raider stealth bomber was unveiled by Northrop Grumman Corp. and the United States Air Force on December 2 at Airforce Plant 42 in Palmdale, California.

There was much slush and fudge about the project, with its release being treated as something akin to the Second Coming.  Those in public relations were kept particularly busy.  Social media was shamelessly used to advertise the event, which was livestreamed.  “Join now for our live reveal of the B-21 Raider,” tweeted Northrop Grumman.  “This changes everything.”

The occasion was the first of its type since November 1988, when the Northrop B-2 Spirit made its debut. The aircraft in question, with serial number 00001 was rolled forward, still covered in tarpaulin, from a hangar before defence and policy wonks, the press and 2,000 workers.  The removal of the covering revealed a machine reminiscent of the original B-2 with an extra-terrestrial echo, described as “space-age coatings”.

Talcott Parsons and the Promise of Transdiscipliarity by Rene Wadlow

Talcott Parsons (13 December 1902 – 8 May 1979)  was a leading US sociologist usually considered a member of the structural-functional analysis school.  Some of his major theoretical writings are The Structure of Social Action (New York: McGraw-Hill, 1937), Essays in Sociological Theory Pure and Applied (Glencoe, The Free Press, 1949), The Social System (Glencoe: The Free Press, 1951), and Talcott Parsons and Edward Shils (Editors). Toward a General Theory of Action (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1954).

Parsons taught at Harvard University and was the doctoral thesis advisor of students who went on to became important figures in the same tradition such as Robert K. Merton Social Theory and Social Structure (Glencoe: The Free Press, 1949), Marion J. Levy Jr The Structure of Society (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1952) and Clifford Geertz The Interpretation of Cultures (New York: Basic Books, 1973). He also had students who went on to have radically different approaches and who became strong critics of Parsons’ approach such as C. Wright Mills in his The Sociological Imagination (New York: Oxford University Press, 1959).  Parsons’ approach was also attacked by George Gurvitch (1894-1965) a Russian-born French sociologist who spent the Second World War years in New York City and became knowledgeable with the schools of US sociology.

Europe must be wise and prevent an all-out war in #Ukraine by Christos Mouzeviris

The conflict in Ukraine is not recent. In fact, it has been going on for more than 7 years now, mounting to a loss of life in the thousands; around 13,200 people were killed in the conflict, about 3,350 of them civilians, as of today. It is evident that this war won’t stop, unless there is a decisive action, or the will by all sides involved to end it. So if the Russians have indeed plans to terminate it by invading, it will be Pyrrhic Victory for everyone no doubt.

I have written many articles on Ukraine in the past, so I will try not to repeat myself. I feel for the Ukrainian people, because their land is a territory that is being “pissed on by the big dogs of the world”, in order to mark their territory and sphere of influence. Who are these dogs? In one hand is Russia of course and USA on the other, with Europe being America’s little poodle, siding always with its big brother or master. To me both sides are on the wrong, and Ukraine’s population pays the price.

Anniversary of the Genocide Convention: 9 December 1948 by Rene Wadlow

Genocide is the most extreme consequence of racial discrimination and ethnic hatred. Genocide has as its aim the destruction, wholly or in part, of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such.  The term was proposed by the legal scholar Raphael Lemkin, drawing on the Greek genos (people or tribe) and the Latin cide (to kill).(1)  The policies and war crimes of the Nazi German government were foremost on the minds of those who drafted the Genocide Convention, but the policy was not limited to the Nazi. (2)

The Genocide Convention is a landmark in the efforts to develop a system of universally accepted standards which promote an equitable world order for all members of the human family to live in dignity.  Four articles are at the heart of this Convention and are here quoted in full to understand the process of implementation proposed by the Association of World Citizens, especially of the need for an improved early warning system.

US to include Afghans in review

Afghanistan will send a team to the US to take part in a major policy review of the region, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has announced. In a joint news conference with the new US envoy in the region, Richard Holbrooke, Mr. Karzai said he was "very thankful" to be involved in the talks.

In recent weeks US officials have been critical of Mr. Karzai's leadership. US President Barack Obama, who regards Afghanistan as a priority, accused his government of being "very detached".

Is always amazing when you read something like that. So they were going to talk about the future of Afghanistan without including the people of Afghanistan in this talk? That says something on how American foreign policy worked all these years and why Americans are so popular all around the world!

Iran feels ready for dialogue with US

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said he would welcome talks with the US as long as they were based on "mutual respect". Speaking on the 30th anniversary of the Islamic revolution in Iran, he said Iran would welcome change from the US as long as it was "fundamental".

He said: "The Iranian nation is ready to hold talks... in a fair atmosphere." The two nations cut ties in 1979 after the revolution, when the US embassy in Tehran was occupied for 444 days.

Odd how the word dialogue works with dictators especially when they are dressed in cleric uniform!

Bush at No 10

US President George Bush is meeting British PM Gordon Brown for formal talks at Downing Street, on the second day of his two-day visit to the UK.

The two are set to focus on the Middle East, oil and food prices. Mr. Bush arrived at No 10 after breakfast talks with ex-prime minister Tony Blair. The trip is part of Mr. Bush's final European tour before he leaves office. On Sunday Mr. Bush also met the Queen. His arrival in London was greeted by hundreds of anti-war demonstrators.

I just hope he realized that Brown is not called Tony! But then again …does it matter?

Bin Laden targets Israel

A new audio message purported to be from Osama Bin Laden has called for Muslims to continue the fight to liberate Palestinian lands.

In a tape marking Israel's 60th anniversary, the speaker pledged to continue fighting the Israelis and not give up "a single inch of Palestine". The tape's authenticity could not be verified. The last messages attributed to Bin Laden were aired in March.

The al-Qaeda leader is thought to be in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area. Friday's message, which lasted about nine minutes, was posted on a website commonly used by al-Qaeda.

It came as US President George W Bush ended a trip to Israel coinciding with anniversary celebrations that began last week. The voice on the tape said the fight for the Palestinian cause was the most important factor driving al-Qaeda's war with the West, and that it had fuelled the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US.

And he continues living in the fifteenth century riding his horse!

A wedding for a Bush

The daughter of US President George W Bush has got married in a private ceremony attended by 200 family and close friends at his Texas ranch.

Jenna Bush wed Henry Hager, a business student who worked as an aide to Mr. Bush's former adviser Karl Rove. "This is a joyous occasion for our family," said Mr. Bush in his weekly radio address.

Correspondents say the wedding has been kept out of the public eye, with airspace cleared above the ranch. Jenna's twin sister Barbara was her maid of honor, and 14 female attendants and 14 male ushers were at the ceremony.

And keep away from politics …three Bush are more than enough for this earth!

US reassure Georgia over Russia

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has assured Georgia that the US is firmly committed to supporting the country's sovereignty.

Georgia says Russian moves to forge closer ties with two of its breakaway regions threaten its sovereignty. The row between the two neighbors will be discussed at a closed-door session of the UN Security Council.

After meeting Georgia's foreign minister, Ms Rice said the US was "very concerned" by Russia's actions. Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision last week to order closer links between Russia and Georgia's two breakaway regions - Abkhazia and South Ossetia - prompted outrage in Tbilisi.

This US administration never learns, support another dictatorship for just one reason, to be against Russia which apparently is not the enemy anymore!!! Amazing but with Saddam they did exactly the same!!!

Pope urges global unity on crises

The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, has told the UN in New York that member states should solve the world's crises together.

Benedict XVI, the third pope to address the UN, said the world was still subject to "the decisions of a few", without naming countries. He urged states to protect their people from "grave and sustained" human rights abuses or face outside intervention.

The Pope later visited a synagogue as part of his six-day US tour. Pope Benedict visited Park East synagogue, just hours before the start of the Jewish Passover, becoming the first leader of the Roman Catholic church to visit a Jewish place of worship in the US.

His agenda in New York, his last stop before returning to Rome, also includes visiting Ground Zero and celebrating Mass at Yankee Stadium.

Pity his says that in the country that became an example of exactly the opposite!

Pope attacks US sex abuse record

Pope Benedict XVI has criticized US bishops for their handling of child sex scandals, saying their response to the crisis had sometimes been very poor.

He laid part of the blame for the crisis, of which he feels "deeply ashamed", on a breakdown in US values. On his first official US visit, the Pope said he hoped the "time of trial" would help start a Church purification.

On Thursday, the German Pontiff is due to celebrate Mass for 45,000 people at a new Washington baseball stadium. On Wednesday morning, thousands of guests welcomed the Pope, who was 81 on Wednesday, to his first White House meeting with President George W Bush.

What’s the matter; he feels that he has paid too much? I mean with all these cases involving catholic priests it seems like the American bishop is Michael Jackson and the catholic cathedral inside the Neverland!!!

Brown to meet Wall Street bankers

Why? Is he applying for a new job? Gordon Brown will tell Wall Street bankers to reveal their financial losses quickly during his three-day trip to the United States. Mr. Brown believes the move is necessary to help end a global credit crunch.

He will begin his stay by having breakfast at the United Nations with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The prime minister will also be meeting President George W Bush and Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke to discuss problems with the world market.

Later in the week Mr. Brown plans to meet presidential hopefuls Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain to talk about bilateral relations between Britain and the US. He told the Wall Street Journal of plans to capitalize on English's dominance as the international language, with the British Council and American organizations offering to help anyone in the world who wanted to learn to speak it.

Now I’m sure, the man is looking for a new job and to immigrate to US the same time!!!

US welcomes for Pope

Pope Benedict XVI has received an unprecedented presidential greeting from George W Bush after arriving for his first official visit to the US.

Mr. Bush and his wife Laura were waiting on the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base when the Pontiff's plane touched down. During his six-day visit, the head of the Catholic Church will address the UN and lead prayers at Ground Zero.

Before arriving the Pope told reporters on board his plane that he was "deeply ashamed" of sexual abuse by US clergy. Pope Benedict, who was elected three years ago, vowed to work against a recurrence of the crisis, which tarnished the Church's reputation, saying "we will absolutely exclude pedophiles from the sacred ministry".

In recent years, the US Catholic Church, which has around 65 million followers, has paid $2bn (£1bn) to settle clergy sexual abuse cases. The damage limitation over past scandals is not the main purpose of the Pontiff's first trip to the US though.

So this is it, the Pope is not going to talk about Iraq and George W. Bush will avoid …children! What a …blessing!

Fly with the economy

The biggest airline in the US has canceled another 900 flights after safety concerns forced it to ground 300 of its aircraft.

It is the third day of cancellations by American Airlines. More than 2,400 flights have been affected, causing delays for 100,000 passengers. The action follows an inspectors' warning of problems with wiring repairs on the MD-80 aircraft two weeks ago.

Other major US carriers have also been forced to ground planes for inspection. Southwest, Delta and United are among those affected, and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it could not rule out further groundings as it widens aircraft safety investigations in the next two months. The FAA has been tightening up its inspections since it was discovered last year that fuselage cracks on Southwest planes had gone undetected because of missed inspections.

It seems that the airlines leading US economy’s long fly down!

North Korea nuclear negotiators

Progress has been made on what North Korea will receive from the US in exchange for disclosing its nuclear activities, negotiators have said.

Pyongyang's foreign ministry said consensus had been reached on US political compensation for the declaration by North Korea. A top US diplomat said progress had been made, but would not give a time-line for a possible breakthrough.

The issue has prevented a deal being clinched in disarmament talks. In February 2007 North Korea had agreed to give up its nuclear weapons in return for aid, in a six-nation deal with the US, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. The US had accused Pyongyang of missing a year-end deadline to make a full nuclear declaration as promised.

When I hear …progress with North Korea I have a problem, I feel there is something they don’t tell me and usually this is either when they are going to bomb them or when North Korea is going to bomb …Tokyo!

Sunday, April 6

Some progress...

US President George W Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin have signed a framework agreement but said they had made no breakthrough on differences.

Mr. Putin said Russia remained opposed to US missile defense plans in Europe, but there were "positive developments". Mr. Bush said there was still work to do to persuade Moscow that the system was not aimed at Russia. Their farewell meeting, in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, came a month

Before Mr. Putin was due to stand down.

Russian President-elect Dmitry Medvedev also met Mr. Bush, saying he hoped to continue advancing Russia-US relations.

Both are together for the last time and both are not going to be president’s by the end of the year …one is going to be strong and return in presidents soon the other will be forgotten or better remembered as the worst example!

Clintons' earnings exceed $100m

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and her husband, ex-President Bill Clinton, have revealed they earned more than $100m (£50m) in eight years.

Since 2000, the former first couple took in nearly $110m, with more than $20m made in 2007, and gave more than $10m to charity in the same period. Almost half of the income was made from the former president's speeches.

Sen. Clinton had been under pressure to release her returns since rival Barack Obama disclosed his for 2000-2006. Both Sen. Obama and John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, have said they will reveal their 2007 returns later this month.

Both Democratic candidates are keen to show they have nothing to hide from voters as they fight for their party's nomination, the BBC's Jack Izzard reports from Washington. Many Americans will pore over these figures, which show just how much the Clintons are worth, he adds.

Now I might sound stupid but is it possible with $100m to have tax …returns?
