Trimensional anxiety – X #fiction by Thanos Kalamidas

Wednesday noon and you could see strange platforms appearing all around. It was not an arm, a leg or a torso anymore. There were shadows and shapes of creatures marching obviously carrying some kind of weapons nobody could identify.

Disappearances also continued. Actually increased including people from the directive. Paul from the eighth directive and Jan from the sixth had disappeared and I knew it because Harlan from the Eighteenth directive was talking about it while in the lift for the sixteenth floor.

And while Tommy and I tried to keep appearances at the office in a world that was slowly going mad form fear, Britt stayed home unveiling and applying the plan. Communicate with a torso and arms without head and hands.

The Wrong World by Jan Sand

There is an old story of a scientist who invented a machine to transfer consciousness. When his apparatus was complete he had no convenient subject but spotted a centipede on the floor and scooped it up and dropped it into the receiver section. He then put on the headset to dispatch his consciousness. He pressed the activation switch and suddenly discovered himself looking up at his immobile body.

“Hurray!” he thought, “It works.” Then he tried to move the centipede into the light beam that would reverse the process. He moved the first foot and then found he couldn’t figure which other foot to move. The story leaves him immobile, frozen in place. He never gets to figure out which other foot to move to get back into himself.

The Trials of Godwin Emefiele by Kola King

Godwin Emefiele was appointed Central Bank governor by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014. He was one of the few survivors of the Jonathan administration following the sudden change of power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the opposition All Progressives Party, APC that emerged victorious in the 2015 presidential elections. As the nation’s top banker and Governor of the CBN, Emefiele was noted for his trademark suits and tie and with a dark shoe to answer. He was the bankers’ banker.

Having wormed his way into the heart of President Muhammadu Buhari, Emefiele got a second five-year term in 2019 and was due to retire next year. He was the second-longest-serving governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and oversaw an unprecedented downturn of the nation’s economy. Prior to his arrest, he was also one of the movers and shakers and most powerful men in Nigeria. When Emefiele coughed bankers quivered. He also made a controversial run for president but later withdrew from the race after much criticism by civil society and the generality of Nigerians.

A transaction of threads by Theodore K. Nasos

The transaction was not pleasing even before the idea took a kind of solidity. The pain was always there in a strange dancing partnership attitude. Swing left leg first and lofty gripping the handles with sweaty palms, constantly looking from the top. Becoming something anew.

A bolt of fabric. A thread. Something long, stretched  and wrapped many times around, hugging its own form.

A thread. Or many threads. A multitude of threads. Pains from the far past to the recent future. Threads stretched tight and woven one over the other, again and again. Woven tightly. So tightly to become a taut impenetrable thing. No hope to reach.
Exhaustingly not pleasing.

Managing your persistent fears, anxieties and stresses by Stan Popovich

Everybody deals with anxiety and depression, however some people have a difficult time in managing it. As a result, here is a brief list of techniques that a person can use to help manage their most persistent fears and every day anxieties.

When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety, the first thing you can do is to divide the task into a series of smaller steps. Completing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress more manageable and increases your chances of success.

Sometimes we get stressed out when everything happens all at once. When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off of the problem.  A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

Ovi magazine; Monday May 1st, 2023 – International Labour Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems, the thoughts, the reviews, the photos, the paintings and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Monday May 1st, 2023 – International Labour Day

May 1st, International Labour Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in most countries. The struggle for the eight-hour day began in the 1860s. In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Unions of the United States and Canada, organized in 1881 (and changing its name in 1886 to American Federation of Labour) passed a resolution which asserted that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s work from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organizations throughout this district that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution”.

Protection of Human Rights at International Organizations – only a Fiction? – part V by Frantisek Brychta

The reason for writing this article (which follows on the previous ones) is to inform the reader about the way in which complaints concerning the failure of the Council of Europe (hereinafter “CoE”) to fulfil its main task – the duty to ensure justice – are dealt with.

In this case, the handling of a written complaint dated 26 October 2022 is involved. The written complaint was sent to the address of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buricová, by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt via the Czech Post on 26 October 2022.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, has not responded to this complaint (concerning the failure of the Council of Europe (CE) to fulfil its main task) yet. The complaint concerns:

a) Violation of the main task of the Czech Republicand the CE–i. e. to ensure justice and rule of law.

b) Repeated Complaint dated 01 August 2022 (“Repeated Complaint dated 01 August 2022”) filed with theECtHR on 01 August 2022 – the document was included as an evidencein the submission sent to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on 26 October 2022.

To my peers… #poem & #artInstallation by Amir Khatib

“O my companion, who afflicted me and afflicted him,
which I do not describe, just as I do not know how to describe myself,
Let’s try the slope from top to bottom,
After squandering dozens of years as we ascend,
 And here we are, panting.
We have the certainty away from the abyss…
Publicly on the way back we realize ourselves,
 We do what others cannot and hate to do;
We descend to the bottom where no one else wants an experience like this.”

Saturday, April 1

Ovi magazine; Saturday April 1st, 2023 – Fools’ day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Saturday April 1st, 2023 – Fools’ day

April fool’s day by Dr Elsa Lycias Joel

Neither did I relish the idea of making a fool of someone nor did I appreciate people who tried to do the same with me. So, the very mention of April fool’s day made me anxious and angry.

Even as a kid I have wondered why is there this day that entitles people to fool others without understanding if the person at the other end is really enjoying this foolery. Also, I noticed the intensity of practical jokes and hoaxes increased year after year, in all places. Not all enjoyed childish japes. Some kids laughed, some cried and many excelled in the art. Come March 31st, I was wary about not being pranked by particular persons and I felt great about the control I exercised over myself into not giving in. Yes, I couldn’t bring myself to laugh over a handful of silly boys calling me a fool, be it January, February, March or April.  To me, the only girl kid in the household, each one of them who tried to pull my leg looked like a desperate fool whose attempts appeared to be water on a duck’s back. As I grew up, their strategies to fool me grew nastier. Thinking back I’m certain nobody succeeded in cheating me for three reasons:

1. I was stubborn
2. I never trusted anybody readily
3. I mastered the subtle art of giving a damn

Knowing my love for my turtle Peek-a-Boo, they tried making me believe that  one of them saw him being thrown into our well. I stayed calm watching their facial expressions because I knew Peek-a-Boo is after all a turtle. Once in six months our water well was cleaned of slit mud sediment by that ‘long man’ whose name I wasn’t capable of pronouncing. I called him so because he was lean and lanky with long limbs.

Community #poem by Jan Sand

“When politics leaves only a bag of dirty tricks,
And business, more or less inspires crime,
When love resolves into few quick fucks
And kids become a noisy painful waste of time,
Perhaps it’s best to call it quits
And line up all those silly ducks
To realize this life is made for brainless shits,
For sadistic nincompoops to enjoy,
To deploy vast miseries of quizzeries,
Of final disappointments.”
