Be heard! Wishes by Thanos Kalamidas
Customary, New Year’s Day is a day for wishes, amendments and of course resolutions. Hopes for a better year after a disastrous series of years where every …year before was proven better than the one that followed.
Still, here we are full of wishes, amendments and of course resolutions in front of a year that has already laid a shadow of sorrow and fear upon all of us, wherever we live. And I’m really sorry to say, there are no signs of optimism doesn’t matter where you look at.

In a world where there is both appreciation and fear of the mixing of cultural traditions, Maurice Béjart was always a champion of blending cultural influences. He was a world citizen of culture and an inspiration to all who work for a universal culture. His death on 22 November 2007 was a loss, but he serves as a forerunner of what needs to be done so that beauty will overcome the walls of separation. One of the Béjart’s most impressive dance sequences was Jérusalem, cité de la Paix in which he stressed the need for reconciliation and mutual cultural enrichment.

The closing lines of Reuben’s weekly column rolled out from the typewriter. The radio was on. Buddy Holly, Not Fade Away and he typed to the rhythm: bop…bop..bopbop…bop…bop…bopbop…” Through the curtain of snow dual headlight beams sliced across the ceiling. He concentrated on the last line while outside the rumbling of a car engine cut out, a door opened and closed and Lydia greeted a man at the back door. Where had he been this time? Kingston? New York?
“Hey kid, how you doing?” Leo’s tall silhouette filled the doorway of his room. He stepped in, the light falling on his dark eyebrows and blue eyes, pale skin and rich dark hair combed in a wave from his forehead. In his hands he twirled a brown fedora which seemed to Reuben to be an oddity with his jean jacket, black shirt with white buttons, black pleated pants and Converses. He was dressed more for spring than he was for a winter blizzard.

Conscience: The Inner Voice of the Higher Self by Rene Wadlow
The United Nations General Assembly has designated 5 April as the International Day of Conscience. An awakened conscience is essential to meeting the challenges which face humanity today as we move into the World Society. The great challenge which humanity faces today is to leave behind the culture of violence in which we find ourselves and move rapidly to a culture of peace and solidarity. We can achieve this historic task by casting aside our ancient national, ethnic, and social prejudices and begin to think and act as responsible Citizens of the World.
An awakened conscience makes us sensitive to hearing the inner voice that warns and encourages. We have a conscience so that we may not let ourselves be lulled to sleep by the social environment in which we find ourselves but will remain alert to truth, justice, and reason. As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says in Article 1 “All human beings are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

I went to see Nicholas the next day. Mrs. Schlott answered the door and said without my asking, “He’s at the market.”
He would likely be at Enzo’s stall and I was about to thank her when she snapped back at me: “Why are you giving him so many books? Every week he brings in more books. There’s no more space in his room.”
I could not comprehend what I was hearing. Too many books? What did that mean? I didn’t think my suggesting they build could more shelves was going to be very well received. “What would you like me to do, Mrs. Schlott?”
“Just don’t give him anymore damn books. Simple,” she said closing the door.

As soon as we turned the corner onto Rainbow Street we knew something was up. Mrs. Schlott was in front of our house talking with a couple of neighbours. When Nora pulled into the driveway, Mrs. Schlott came running to me as I stepped out of the car.
“Do you know where Niki is?” she said pleadingly. Nora told her we had been away all day and I had no idea. “He left on his bike a few hours ago and he hasn’t come home. I’ve looked everywhere.”
Niki had been given a bicycle and over the summer he had travelled the neighbourhood including the harbour and dockyards. One day I had seen him in the farmers market. He often waved at me as he went by with a, “See y’a later.” Getting away from his house and exploring was a full time job.
“My husband is at work and I can’t walk much more,” said Mrs. Schlott now almost in tears.

Rainbow Street – Part 3 #ShortStory #Fiction by Richard Stanford
Nora had been promoted at D-M Publishing and was now an assistant editor. I was working full time that summer at the library but it was Nora who held things together. In addition to her job at D-M, she also wrote book reviews for newspapers, read manuscripts. She also had a dream of establishing an independent book publishing house devoted to Canadian authors but financing such things was proving to be difficult. Nobody with any investment capital were willing to risk a dime on such a venture, especially one headed by a woman. She brought home so many books I had to build more shelves in the hallway which was getting narrower by the week. Most of the books were American and, as Mr. Duff said, mostly bad.
In my spare time I tried to take a photograph that was properly exposed, for once, and maybe in focus, for once, if I was lucky or if I had any talent. It was on one of those hot humid days in the summer of ‘54 when I was again trying to find inspiration with my camera when the typing stopped in the study. Nora came out the back door in a plume cigarette smoke, her floral dress swaying to her quick stride. She parked herself on the lawn chair in front of me. “We have to talk.”

Rainbow Street #Short story #fiction – Part 2 by Richard Stanford
A week before Labour Day in 1953 Mr. and Mrs. Schlott knocked on our front door. Nora was typing a book review in her study so I was delegated to see what was up. Mr. Schlott was a policeman and he was still in uniform with a gun in his holster. Oh no, I thought, what have I done?
Mr. Schlott chuckled. “Don’t worry, buddy, I’m off duty.”
That was unusual. We never saw much of Mr. Schlott. Shift work, mostly nights was his life so he was seldom around. He was a big man, with broad shoulders, a barrel chest, thick neck and a head like a boxer. He was friendly enough but it took effort.
“We were wondering if you could walk Niki to school next week,” said Mrs.Schlott. “It’s his first day. His school is right across the street from yours.”
“Niki? Who’s Niki” I asked.

Rainbow Street – Part 1 #ShortStory #Fiction by Richard Stanford
The boy arrived on our street one day without a name and without a past. It was the spring of 1950, a hot humid day in the east-end of Montréal where the aromas of pure coke, tanning dye and railway dust welcomed the morning. I lived with my parents on St. Clement Street, two houses up from the train tracks. We kept time to the passenger trains and lost sleep to the rumble of freight trains. But like anything else you get used to it, that and the aromas. My father never did get used to it. On this day I was in our backyard with a Brownie Instamatic camera and I had plenty of territory to find subjects to shot. Our backyard was large, populated by a couple of apple trees, several shrubs and beds of roses – my mother’s handiwork. The roses became the first of my images because birds would not sit still. Neither could my mother.
“Where are you?” Nora shouted from the back door, a cigarette dangling from her mouth.
I was on the ground framing in the viewfinder what I thought to be a perfect shot. “What!”
“Don’t bark at me, young man. Now come, and bring the camera,” and she set off in a puff of smoke along the walkway to the street.

“Revolution” #ShortStory by Richard Stanford
I had been following information regarding pro-German Russians, genuine Russian patriots who wish to see Lenin thwarted at all costs, including assassination. At the last moment I was warned away from a meeting hall where many of these patriots were assembling. I had only gone a little way down an ill-lit street when I realized I was being followed by three or four men. I picked up my pace but they closed in on me and suddenly I was pushed head first to the ground. I managed to jump back up, swing around and flourish my walking stick. As expected one of my assailants seized it. It is a sword-stick and the moment the attacker had the scabbard in his fist, I drew back the blade and lunged forward, running the blade through his thigh. He screamed and collapsed to the pavement. His comrades fled and I ran back to the Bristol Hotel.
In the lobby of the hotel I examined the blade, anxious to know what it looked like after such an adventure. I had never run a man through before. There was only a slight film of blood on the blade and a dark stain at the tip but I was so occupied with my inspection that I did not notice a man waiting at the top of the stairs until I blundered into him. The stranger was a powerfully built man, his face was weather-beaten with a glint of animal alertness in his eyes. He seemed highly amused at the examination I was making of my blade. So attentive I was that I had not noticed my own injury. “That’s a nasty gash you’ve got there, my friend,” said the stranger.

Frank Baum: The Father of the Wizard of Oz by Rene Wadlow
L. Frank Baum (1856 – 1916) whose birth anniversary we mark on 15 May is largely forgotten as a writer while his 1899 book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz lives on through the 1939 film with Judy Garland as Dorothy and references in essays to the Tin Woodman without a heart or Toto, Dorothy’s faithful dog.
The story begins as Dorothy and Toto are picked up from their farm in Kansas by a cyclone and carried into another world − the land of Oz. Dorothy wants to return to Kansas and is advised to consult the Wizard who lives in the Emerald City at the center of the Land of Oz. Dorothy and Toto set out on the Yellow Brick Road for the Emerald City. On the way they meet three companions, each of whom joins her in the hope that the Wizard of Oz will be able to give him what he lacks. The first is the Scarecrow whose head is of straw and wants some brains so he can think. The second is the Tin Woodman who wants a heart so he can love. The third is the Cowardly Lion, who should be the king of the forest, but this lion is afraid of everything. He wants courage so that he can act.
