I went to see Nicholas the next day. Mrs. Schlott answered the door and said without my asking, “He’s at the market.”

He would likely be at Enzo’s stall and I was about to thank her when she snapped back at me: “Why are you giving him so many books?  Every week he brings in more books.  There’s no more space in his room.”

I could not comprehend what I was hearing. Too many books? What did that mean? I didn’t think my suggesting they build could more shelves was going to be very well received. “What would you like me to do, Mrs. Schlott?”

“Just don’t give him anymore damn books. Simple,” she said closing the door.
