Nigeria: A Democracy in search of Democrats by Kola King

The recent simultaneous attacks on the offices of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Abeokuta, Ogun State and Ede, Osun State is as though a dagger thrust through the heart of democracy. Apparently, the perpetrators of that dastardly crime described as arsonists were acting on the prompting of their political paymasters. Whoever is behind those attacks are enemies of democracy. All these portend ominous signals for our democracy. Also, Nigeria’s democracy may be imperiled judging by the litigious propensity of politicians to dispute the outcome of every election. Due to this proclivity on the part of political actors, INEC is saddled with hundreds of electoral cases across the country over the election of candidates in the party primaries, even as it prepares for the 2023 general elections. Specifically, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, said recently in Abuja that the commission is currently facing 600 court cases that arose over the nomination of candidates for the 2023 general elections. This is outside cases that arise from election petitions from State and National Assemblies to gubernatorial and presidential elections.

The INEC chief who spoke at a seminar organized by the Court of Appeal for Election Petition Tribunal members billed to adjudicate on election disputes for next year’s general elections stated that the situation was worrisome when a political party served 70 court summons on the electoral body in one day on the same issue.

The Nature And Power Of Intent #thoughts by Jan Sand

There is a good deal of astronomical activity these days to search for life beyond what we know on this planet . At this time there is no positive evidence of extra-terrestrial life apparent. One of the fundamental difficulties remains our lack of a clear definition of exactly what life is, so the search generally  has been a search for planets very much like our planet Earth containing liquid water and oxygen and a temperature range that we prefer.

Ideally we would desire to contact intelligent life with a technology somewhat similar to what we posses. Since planets beyond those in our solar system orbit stars so far away, contact through some form of electromagnetic radiation is restricted to the speed of light, which is desperately slow for interstellar communication. Nothing else seems available at the moment so intellectual exchange presents vast difficulties and we are left with intellectual speculation until something definite appears.

Vegetables were one of the hallmarks of civilization, and are arguably the reason we settled and stopped being nomads, we couldn’t travel anymore when we planted our crops, we had to be there to tend them as they grew.

The rise of the tool by Jan Sand

Dictionary definitions of “tool” generally refer to some device used by humans to serve a purpose but recent investigations have shown that many creatures other than humans have found it useful to extend their physical abilities with various available implements. Nevertheless, humans excel above all other creatures in developing new ways to fabricate sophisticated objects to manipulate, not only their environment, but each other to create and control the complex of human society.

Viewed as a greater generality than a specific object, a tool can also be a concept or an idea or some generally accepted social mechanism which is used to dominate human relationships. This extends the basic concept of the tool to a social continuum far greater than a mere object and becomes an object lesson in how the tool itself can overpower its creator and endanger the entire nature of society to the detriment of all life. The recent US presidential election clearly indicates how a social tool, the Electoral College, dominated its master, the democratic popular vote, to create a rather odd and quite frightening situation. The alternative candidate who exhibited an equal relish for demolishing planetary life with the exorbitant feral delight in extending the US dominance in a nuclear conflict with Russia did not seem much of an encouraging alternative. But more general human social tools such as money, the military-industrial complex, private property, and many more complex social relationships currently are in operation in ways not particularly favorable to this most peculiar species, the entirety of humanity or, to be more general, all other life on the planet.

Australia’s New ASEAN Farm Worker Visa Hits Snags by Murray Hunter

The necessary amendments to immigration legislation to enable ASEAN skilled, semi-skilled, and un-skilled farm workers to be employed on Australian farms was ratified by the Governor General last week. Now workers from participating ASEAN countries are able to enter into employment agreements with Australian farmers.

Although the legislation is enacted, there are still many unsettled details about precisely how the new visa will work. Obtaining labour is critical to much of Australia’s farm industry, which is suffering severe shortages, particularly around harvest times. Seasonal workers from the United Kingdom have dried up due to border closures during the pandemic, and local urban unemployed cannot be attracted to farms for this seasonal work.

There has been a lot of criticism of this new visa, primarily over the potential avenues of exploitation that may occur to workers. The union movement is also concerned that Asian farm workers would depress wage levels, while state health authorities have been concerned about the logistics of quarantine.

Has squandering of public wealth become the new norm? by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

This year the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York city was poorly attended in-person by the world leaders. Only about 73 heads of state and 31 heads of government attended the event. Under measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 , member states had agreed to limit the delegations entering UN headquarters with a leader or minister to six people, with only four of them allowed in the General Assembly chamber.

Rather than coming in person, many world leaders chose to deliver their speech virtually over the internet. Perhaps a wise decision from many fiscally smart leaders who were by no means unmindful of the mere fact that virtual meetings cannot substitute for in-person one-to-one or group contacts to tackle regional and global challenges and crises.

But what could justify the decision of some leaders from poorer nations who had defied logic and common sense and chose to spend tens of millions of hard-earned foreign currency to deliver their speech in person? Did the cost-benefit analysis justify their rather extravagant trip?
