Nigeria: A Democracy in search of Democrats by Kola King

The recent simultaneous attacks on the offices of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Abeokuta, Ogun State and Ede, Osun State is as though a dagger thrust through the heart of democracy. Apparently, the perpetrators of that dastardly crime described as arsonists were acting on the prompting of their political paymasters. Whoever is behind those attacks are enemies of democracy. All these portend ominous signals for our democracy. Also, Nigeria’s democracy may be imperiled judging by the litigious propensity of politicians to dispute the outcome of every election. Due to this proclivity on the part of political actors, INEC is saddled with hundreds of electoral cases across the country over the election of candidates in the party primaries, even as it prepares for the 2023 general elections. Specifically, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, said recently in Abuja that the commission is currently facing 600 court cases that arose over the nomination of candidates for the 2023 general elections. This is outside cases that arise from election petitions from State and National Assemblies to gubernatorial and presidential elections.

The INEC chief who spoke at a seminar organized by the Court of Appeal for Election Petition Tribunal members billed to adjudicate on election disputes for next year’s general elections stated that the situation was worrisome when a political party served 70 court summons on the electoral body in one day on the same issue.

Violence in China

Violence in China's restive western region of Xinjiang has left at least 140 people dead and more than 800 people injured, state media say.

Several hundred people have also been arrested after the violence erupted in the city of Urumqi on Sunday.Xinhua news agency said police restored order after demonstrators attacked passers-by and set fire to vehicles. The protest was reportedly prompted by a deadly fight between Uighurs and Han Chinese in southern China last month.

And these are the news that can reach us...

US violated Venezuelan airspace

Venezuela has denounced an alleged violation of its airspace by an American military aircraft.

Defense Minister Gustavo Rangel said the jet had been tracked by country's air defenses over the Venezuelan-owned island of Orchila on Saturday. He said the US ambassador would be summoned to provide an explanation.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a fierce critic of Washington, has in the past accused the US administration of destabilizing his country. Mr. Rangel told a news conference that the US aircraft "practically flew over" Orchila and another Venezuelan island before turning back.

Right, obviously Hugo needs some more internal support so …us violates the airspace! Hugo, was not US air force, it was UFOs!!!

A plot to kill in Zimbabwe

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has postponed a return to Zimbabwe because of concerns about a plot to kill him.

"We have received information from a credible source concerning a planned assassination attempt," his spokesman George Sibotshiwe said.

Mr Tsvangirai was set to return to campaign for a run-off presidential election against Robert Mugabe. On Friday, the US ambassador warned post-election violence had made a fair second round run-off vote impossible.

Mugabe will do everything to survive, don’t give him the chance!

Zimbabwe’s second round

Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said he will contest a presidential run-off, despite fears of widespread poll violence.

Speaking in South Africa, he said people would feel "betrayed" if he did not run, and vowed to return shortly. Mr Tsvangirai called for an end to violence, as well as full access by international monitors and media.

Official first-round results put him ahead of President Robert Mugabe, but not by enough votes to win outright. Mr Tsvangirai had earlier insisted he had secured more than 50% of the vote, and that there was therefore no need for a second round.

"I am ready, and the people are ready for the final round," the opposition leader went on to demand "unfettered access of all international observers" and journalists covering the vote.

Morgan is ready for the second round and this is fine, the question is if Mugabe is ready to go to prison and to be followed by the international court for crimes against humanity!

Zimbabwe is burning

Zimbabwe's opposition says its activists have been attacked in a campaign of "massive violence" around the country since recent elections.

"Militias are being rearmed, Zanu-PF supporters are being rearmed," said MDC Secretary General Tendai Biti. This year's election campaign has been relatively peaceful until now.

Meanwhile, a judge has agreed to hear an opposition request that the results of last month's presidential election be released, as an urgent matter. "The case should proceed," said Justice Tendai Uchena in Harare's High Court. He then began hearing the actual arguments of the case. The opposition says the violence is meant to intimidate rural voters ahead of a possible run-off poll.

And it becomes worst by every minute. Mugabe’s dictatorship shows its real face. Let’s hope that now the African Union and South Africa will react otherwise the poor people of Zimbabwe are doomed!

Remember that as usual in these cases kids will pay the worst part now and in the future if thay have any with Mugabe around!
