Ovi magazine; Wednesday March 16th, 2022 – St. Urho’s Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Wednesday March 15th, 2022 – St. Urho’s Day

St. Urho is an unusual character; according to legend, he chased the grasshoppers out of Finland shouting at them, “Grasshoppers, Grasshoppers, Go to Hell!” and saved the wine vineyards from destruction, saving the grapes and the worker’s jobs, all while fortified by sour milk and fish soup. From this instance, he became a hero. Sound similar to St. Patrick, doesn’t it?

Well, that’s because St. Patrick inspired him. As the Finnish version of the Irish saint, there are statues of him in Minnesota, depicted holding large grasshoppers in honor of his sacrifice. People wear purple and green on this day and celebrate by drinking wine and reciting his story.

The funny thing was is that St. Urho doesn’t exist and never has. He’s a story born out of sheer fascination and humor. Many sources argue that the originator of the story began with department store owner Richard Mattson in Virginia, MN. He alongside some friends created the character as a joke.

Saving #Ukraine: The Annexations are Over… This is #Poland — 1939! by Bohdan Yuri

When we’ll look back at the history, we will be ashamed at what the West did not do — WE did not STOP the War.

NATO and the West have got it all wrong in Europe. This is not a NATO vs. Russia conflict; it’s a Democracy vs. Dictatorship fight for Europe.

Putin’s already sliced sections off Moldova and Georgia, they’re next for a full scale invasion. And they’re not a part of NATO, so easy pickings.

One man once scared all of Europe into submission and you’re allowing that same type of Nazi to take us into another world war. Yes, we are in one now…

The Annexations are Over…This is  a replay of Poland — 1939!

Business as Usual: #Facebook, #Russia and Hate Speech by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

Seedy, compromised and creepy, the surveillance machine of Facebook, now operating under the broader fold of its parent company Meta Platforms, is currently giving out the very signals that it was condemned for doing before: encourage discussions on hating a group and certain figures, while spreading the bad word to everyone else to do so.

The Russian Federation, President Vladimir Putin, and Russians in general emerge as the latest contenders, the comic strip villains who those in the broadly designated “West” can now take issue with. According to a Meta spokesperson, the Russian attack on Ukraine had made the company make temporary “allowances for forms of political expression that would normally violate our rules like violent speech such as ‘death to the Russian invaders.’” Cryptically, the same spokesman goes on to say that, “We still won’t allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians.” Meta gives us no guidelines on what would constitute a “credible call”.

Metaverse? And a Zuckerbergian elegy? by Dr. Azly Rahman

I wrote the word “METAVERSE” on my whiteboard today for my academic contemplation the next few days and my lecture notes for my course Sociology of the Future. I then created a concept/mind map out of it. This topic — the fundamental character of technology and its human and social consequences is not new to me. Since I started graduate school ages ago, my research papers in political-economy have mainly centered around the issue of technological fantasy and reality and the so-called “Computer Revolution”.

My dissertation, submitted to Columbia University explored the concepts of cybernetics, hegemony, and utopianism as digital communication technologies are pushed to become the foundation of new cities, impacting spaces of knowledge and power. In 1987, I wrote a Masters essay on the political-economy and philosophy of the “Information Age” when the term was first coined. I explored the linkages between the idea of American reform in education during the Reagan Administration and the role of corporate-industrial complex in defining the terms and trends of the “Information society.” Now we have a new idea: “metaverse.”. It will be a word as common as “bitcoin,” “augmented reality,” and “AI” or “artificial intelligence” our children and grandchildren will breathe in daily. Like air. But what is it?

When Facebook decided on a name change a few weeks ago, I thought of it philologically and epistemologically. I started thinking about paradigms, the evolution of technology, evolutionary markers, political-economy, anatomy of autonomous technology, the reality of virtual reality, the locus of control of this post-post-informational-post capitalist world of digital materialism. I started thinking of the notion of a “new matrix”. Of course, the movie too. So, here I am, again back to another room in my own “metaverse” of academic musing. to contemplate on the next steps for these technological titans — Facebook/META, Google, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, etc., and how we are to consume the ideology that has become more “frankensteinish” in nature.

I wrote these too as an endnote on that whiteboard in my classroom: “Is the metaverse anti-Renaissance, anti-Enlightenment, anti-Humanism”? In other words, how virtual and augmented must our lives be?

Electric Horses #poem & #painting by Nikos Laios

“I dreamt of
Electric horses
Burning across the sky
Over melting clocks
On midnight beats,
With sleeping angels
And broken demons
In ancient cafes and
Whiskey bars.”

Blowing the Whistle at Facebook by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

The only surprise was that it did not come sooner. Big Tech whistleblowers are not exactly running out of the offices of Silicon Valley, so it was with some excitement that Facebook could produce a person willing enough to show us the laundry, with the dirt still caking the content.

And the laundry in question proved to be bountiful, with internal company documents running into the thousands showing a fruit salad range of mendacity, deception and approaches to combating hate, violence and misinformation on its platform. The Wall Street Journal capitalised.

Was the 76th UN General Assembly session all about blah, blah, blah? by Dr. Habib Siddiqui

We live in an interesting time. No time before has the world faced a crisis of this magnitude of a global pandemic, climate change, migration, conflicts and unending wars. More than a quarter billion people has been infected with the corona virus, which has already killed five million people across the globe; in the USA alone the death toll has surpassed 700,000. Tens of millions of people are forced to migrate from their homes for a plethora of reasons. Governments across the planet have become more authoritarian, often abusing people’s right and trust, and misusing national wealth for personal gratification. Conflicts, crimes and corruption are all-time high.

Ovi magazine and Facebook censoring

Last weekend -plus Monday, (2-5 of October 2021) Facebook blocked Ovi magazine and in extent my personal account because of a photo and according to the message I got, violation of the community standards, specifying that the photo had: violent and graphic content , adult nudity and sexual activity. The photo was about 1941 Babi Yar massacre, part of the Holocaust! And it was from our history section, the Ovi pedia!

If you want you can check the article and the photo, Facebook censored, here in …another social media: https://ovipedia557120992.wordpress.com/2021/09/29/sep-29-1941-babi-yar-massacre/

Facebook literally censored the Holocaust!

facens000001_400

Despite my complains via mails and the structured message board included in Facebook I received no reply or any explanation on since when the Holocaust is considered … adult nudity and sexual activity!

On the contrary and to my astonishment and shock, when Ovi magazine account returned on Tuesday 4th, I got the message: Account warning, “Your account may be restricted if you violate again.”

Unfortunately Facebook is still a strong communication tool for publications, especially ones like Ovi Magazine and we will continue using – at least until another photo of the …holocaust bothers their …democracy – but is not the only one among the social media where Ovi magazine has a presence.
