Olli Rehn and Serbia

Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica rejected the treaty in early February, because he felt that the EU was trying to use it to buy Serbian approval for the independence of Kosovo. Rehn says that the offer remains in force, and he hopes that the matter could move forward in the coming weeks.

He added that negotiations on the treaty were completed already last year. Now at stake is when the political preconditions for signing the treaty are met.

Why the surprise? Didn’t Europeans use Serbia as a scapegoat for all the mistakes they have done in Yugoslavia the last fifteen years and in Balkans the last fifty years if not hundred? Who’s really responsible and how we are going to find out? Didn’t the Germans push Slovenia in independence and EU hurried to recognize the new country without thinking the future of the Yugoslav confederation? Aren’t they doing the same mistake with FYROM and Kosovo? Or is Mr. Rehn unable to understand this kind of politics?
