Society of truth, society of lies by Joseph Gatt

There are basically two types of social models that you will encounter: social models based on the truth, and social models based on lies.

In social models based on the truth, the smart survive and the stupid don’t. All you need to strive for is excellence. You need to be an individual that has the smarts, you need to work with smart people. You also need to come up with good products, to be productive, and your products need to be practical, simple to use, healthy, and pleasant. Problem-solving is also important, and you will need to skillfully fix whatever problem you might encounter.

So in social models based on the truth, you will need to be honest about where you products come from, what your products are useful for. The more clearly you express your thoughts, the more likely you are to move forward and achieve wealth and happiness.

The BRICS Mandate by Abigail George

The future of seawater towards immortality, dust singing of sick birds. My sister was the former, and I, the latter. The night air clandestine and spiritual. Your country, in faraway Johannesburg, is a haunted land filled with the proverbial thirst. The measures of longing. Of dying to belong to feast and the imperative. Every broken family is filled with cracks in their system. Their lungs overflowing with flame like a fireplace in a mansion. I don’t know whether this shoreline will still be here in a decade. I’m thinking of the wind. Feasting my eyes on gulls. It’s beautiful out here. The singing geography here reminds me of Alice in her wonderland. A word like ‘emphasis’.

I cannot comprehend how she moves in the world now yet I still see the beauty in the spell of her eyes. I’ve loved her, my sister (who lives in faraway Johannesburg now), from afar my entire life. I see and hear everything in this doctor’s waiting room. The receptionist with her open, friendly smile when she comes to check my sugar. I never wanted to be a poet. Instead, it chose me. Maturity comes with letting go. Learning how to fly and then with having no expectations you will find wealth there. A wealth of spirituality, knowledge, prosperity within you. We both needed each other for the longest time and then we didn’t. That’s honesty for you. I cannot comprehend the depth of her in the world, anymore. She is no longer my muse.

Dangerous Precedents and Hypothetical Threats: The Deportation of Novak Djokovic by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

Australia’s treatment of Novak Djokovic, the tennis world number one, has been revelatory. Unintentionally, this has exposed the seedier, arbitrary and inconsistent nature of Australia’s border policies. The approval by the Australian Federal Court of the Immigration Minister Alex Hawke’s decision to re-cancel the prominent Serb’s visa left the country a heaving precedent that will be invoked, in future, with relish.

Djokovic had originally entered the country under the assumption that he had been granted a legitimate vaccine exemption. As the former Australian Tennis Open director Paul McNamee explained to the ABC, “every player and support member fills in a form, visa 408, and everyone does that, you are guided through it by Tennis Australia, every step of the way, and then you get approval, that is the process.”

Serious, frivolous, cold people by Joseph Gatt

To put things simply, serious people try to solve problems and plan their future lives. Frivolous people are more concerned with being funny and making people laugh. Cold people are mean, but that’s because they want to be left alone and don’t want people to come too close.

So those are basically the three categories of people that you will encounter. Think about it. You go online, and you have all the serious people trying to get to the truth of the story. Then you have frivolous kids throwing jokes when the atmosphere is trying to be serious. Then you have cold people being aggressive when they are trying to get everyone to stay quiet. And those are the three forces that confront each other.

So what are serious people like? What are frivolous people like? What are mean people like?

Henry Usborne (16 Jan. 1909 -16 March 1996) World Citizen Activist by Rene Wadlow

Henry Usborne was a British Member of Parliament (M.P.) elected in the Labour Party landslide in 1945. He was re-elected in 1950. He was an engineer and Burmingham businessman yet a socialist. Born in India, he always had a broad view of world politics. He was concerned that the United Nations whose Charter had been signed in June 1945 before the use of the atomic bombs had the same weaknesses as the League of Nations. Soon after his election, he spoke in Parliament for the U.N. to have the authority to enforce its decisions, an authority which the League of Nations lacked. He spoke out for a code of human rights and for an active world bank.

The early years of the United Nations were colored by the growing tensions between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. – the start of the Cold War. There were deep disagreements over the future of Germany. Non-official contacts between English and Soviets became more difficult. Proposals for international control of atomic energy were refused or not acted upon within the U.N.

More on serious, frivolous, cold company cultures by Joseph Gatt

I am kind of a serious individual when it comes to getting work done. That is a lot of times I like to discuss company problems, try to solve them, and try to build a future for the company.

I’ve worked for many cold organizations, mainly in South Korea but not just there. The idea in cold organizations is that they claim to be serious, but their version of being serious is that of standing at a distance, not communicating, and solving problems on your own. The problem is that company problems tend to involve many colleagues who play different roles, and if you can’t get them to play their part, the problems linger on.

Of course I’ve worked for many frivolous companies where they may get excited when it comes to throwing jokes and criticizing staff and ridiculing staff, they tend not to be so excited when it comes to playing the corporate role or fulfilling the company mission. A lot of times no one even knows what the company mission is.

2022: Matters Arising – What’s on the table this year? by Kola King

The year 2021 has come and gone. 2022 has quitely rolled in with its bag and baggage. The previous year was shaped by the global pandemic. This affected many economies due to the global lockdown in 2020 and its concomitant effects which spilled over into 2021. Several economies went into recession. Indeed many economies tanked but thankfully Nigeria exited recession in the first quarter of 2021, against the forecast of the World Bank. So what’s on the table this year?

Matters arising in the new year include security, economy, job creation, among others. Of course, politics is already in the air with politicians gearing up for the next elections in second half of 2023.

Still, insecurity has become a recurring decimal as many parts of the country have one security challenge or the other. This has stretched our security forces beyond limits. At the moment, the military is operating in several theatres in the northeast, northwest and northcentral. A strong security presence is also on ground in the east. The same thing applies in the Niger Delta. In addition, Nigeria’s territorial waters have come under the shadow of piracy. However, the Navy is working assiduously to police the Gulf of Guinea and to keep piracy in check.

(Science-fiction) Let’s make a virus! by Joseph Gatt

You see, Gatt. They borrow money to start a business. Raise startup funds. They go to the bank and come up with grandiose schemes for their business. They claim to have invented a better version of Amazon or Facebook.

You see, Gatt. These entrepreneurs then travel the world to meet fellow entrepreneurs, who also borrowed millions of dollars so they can start a business. They meet at pubs, night clubs, jazz clubs, you name it.

These entrepreneurs hire staff that they pay six figures, sometimes seven figures. All with borrowed money. The entrepreneurs and their staff can spend six figures a month on bars, hotels and clubs.

The struggle between two visions of Malaysia – The Malayization of Malaysia by Murray Hunter

Aggregate election figures of votes cast on the peninsula from the last general election show there is a deep polarization in Malaysia. It’s not about a Barisan Nasional /Perikatan Nasional verses a Pakatan Harapan choice for government. It’s much deeper than that. A struggle between a vision for a Malay-Malaysia verses the vision for a diverse and inclusive Malaysia.

Malaya was founded on the premise that power would be shared between the different ethnic groups residing on the peninsula. The constitution recognized the special position of the Malays, in a federation of Malay Sultanates forming the new country. The structure of Westminster modelled governance took on many of the traditional traits of Malay Daulat (sovereignty). These institutions, processes of governance, and conventions were carried over to the formation of Malaysia, which included Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore for a short period in 1963.

The framers of the constitution intended to establish a fully-fledged democracy, where every citizen, whatever his or her ethnic identity was guaranteed equal rights, notwithstanding the special position of the Malays provision. Article 11 of the constitution also guaranteed freedom of religion. These two constitutional guarantees have been encroached upon, debasing the constitution. This lies at the heart of the uneven struggle between the two visions of Malaysia.

Castes and outcasts by Joseph Gatt

Most, if not all societies in the world, are socially stratified. You belong to certain castes whether you like it or not.

Castes could be inherited. Your parents belong to a higher caste, so do you.

Castes could be related to your level of education. The more prestigious the university you attend, the better you stand out socially in many cultures.

Castes could be related to your ethnicity. Perhaps your ethnic group is equivalent to a higher caste, or perceived as a lower caste by your community.

Wealth. Rich people often belong to higher castes. People less fortunate belong to lower castes and are outcasts. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, as the two castes don’t mingle (often the case).

Then you have a few more subtle markers. Physical attributes can lead to you belonging to a higher or lower caste in some cultures. In others, it’s your degree of eloquence or intellect. In some cultures, being competitive leads to you belonging to higher castes, as in getting better grades in school or ranking high at national examinations.
