Migration to Saudi Arabia: Neither Safe Nor Orderly by Rene Wadlow

A 21 August 2023 report by the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch has highlighted the shooting by Saudi Arabia frontier guards of migrants and asylum seekers trying to cross the Yemen-Saudi borter.  Other non-governmental organizations, including the Association of World Citizens, have also focused on the way the armed conflicts in both Ethiopia and Yemen have led to new flows of displacement, refugees, and migrants.

There are some 750,000 Ethiopians currently living in Saudi Arabia. The country is considered by many Ethiopians as the economic eldorado, a place to work and earn money.  For other Ethiopians, Saudi Arabia is an avenue for migration toward European countries.  The same holds true for migrants from the conflicted situation in Somalia.

Saudi-Iranian deal brokered by China will change geopolitics in the MENA by Murray Hunter

For those within the Anglophile world, the recent agreement cut between Saudi Arabia and Iran, brokered by China, received scant reporting. The deal re-establishing relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran after a seven-year hiatus, may potentially become a major pillar for stability within the region.

Relations turned sour when the Saudi authorities executed a Shiite cleric Nimr Al-Nimr, back in 2016. This resulted in mobs storming the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Tehran, and the breaking off of diplomatic relations.

Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed last Friday in Beijing to restore diplomatic ties by reopening their respective diplomatic missions within the next two months. Shiite majority Iran and Sunni majority Saudi Arabia re-establish a nexus between two competing Islamic leaders, within the Middle East and North African region.

President Xi Jinping visited Saudi Arabia last December, and hosted the Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi in Beijing last month. The deal was signed just after President Xi, was re-elected for an unprecedented third term.

This is part of a broader Chinese initiative to broker a wider agreement, which includes Iraq, and Oman to reduce tensions in the region, and potentially realign the Middle East.

Normal Butcheries: Saudi Arabia’s Latest Mass Execution by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

Great reformers are not normally found in theocratic monarchies. Despite assertions to the contrary, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains archaic in the way it deals with its opponents. In its penal system, executions remain standard fare. With liberal democratic countries fixated with the Ukraine conflict and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, it was prudent for Saudi authorities to capitalise.

On March 12, the Saudi Ministry of the Interior announced the execution of 81 Saudi and non-Saudi nationals, bringing the total of those put to death by Riyadh in 2022 to 92. The last grand bout of killing was in 2019, when 37 people, including 33 Shi’a men, were put to death after being convicted by customarily dubious trials.

#Malaysia: UMNO’s Battle Royale – The fight for UMNO leadership and stakes involved by Murray Hunter

While everyone is focused on the electoral battle now going on in Johor, there is another much more important clandestine battle going on. This is the battle for UMNO leadership.

There is strong sentiment on the hustings that UMNO, along with its BN partners are going to do very well in the March 12 state election. The results will define the dominant Malay party, and force the opposition to re-combine in another way, due to the almost certain PKR thrashing.

However, the glitz of newcomers like Syed Saddiq’s MUDA, Mahathir’s Perjuang, and Warisan also making a guest appearance, is hiding the something that will be even more important than the coming general election, due by the third quarter of next year.

How high can oil go?

Oil prices were poised Monday to set a new record at the pump, having surged to within half a cent of their record high of $3.227 a gallon. Oil prices, meanwhile, surged above $108 to a new inflation-adjusted record and their fifth new high in the last six sessions on an upbeat report on wholesale inventories.

How high? Sky high as long there is limited and endangering quality, as long there is a cartel called OPEC controlling the prices and as long Saudi Arabia challenging any sense of human rights and human dignity challenges us all. So high!
