It was June 6, 1995, and a group of men were playing racquetball at Albany in Oregon. All throughout they were shouting encouragement to each other. On this particular day, for reasons unbeknownst to them, they started shouting piratical slang at each other. From there it just kind of took on a life of its own, and they realized by the end of the game that it was necessary that they establish a holiday to celebrate that encouraged the use of such a fine vernacular. The first thing they needed was a date, and it just so happened that the date selected was the birthday of his ex-wife.
For the next seven years they honored this holiday, in relative obscurity, until they happened upon the email address of one Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist and author of a great number of books. He also happened to be hilarious, like any good pirate should be. From there it’s all history, Dave Barry promoted the holiday, and it’s been one amazing year after another as people all over the country celebrate this auspicious holiday.
The Wrong World by Jan Sand
There is an old story of a scientist who invented a machine to transfer consciousness. When his apparatus was complete he had no convenient subject but spotted a centipede on the floor and scooped it up and dropped it into the receiver section. He then put on the headset to dispatch his consciousness. He pressed the activation switch and suddenly discovered himself looking up at his immobile body.
“Hurray!” he thought, “It works.” Then he tried to move the centipede into the light beam that would reverse the process. He moved the first foot and then found he couldn’t figure which other foot to move. The story leaves him immobile, frozen in place. He never gets to figure out which other foot to move to get back into himself.
The story lays out one of the basic problems that has plagued the world since people congregated in herds. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to understand what the world looks like from the point of view of another living being. We can make accommodations and somehow assume that the other being is us just moved over there where it is but that is merely a superficial special transformation.

In the Declaration of Principles and Programme of Action adopted by the 1976 World Employment Conference it is stated, “A basic needs-oriented policy implies the participation of the people in making the decisions which affect them through organizations of their own choice.”
Marshall Wolfe of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) defines participation as “the organized efforts to increase control over resources and regulative institutions in given social situations, on the part of groups and movements often excluded from such control.”
