The Independence Day of Bangladesh, taking place on 26 March, is a national holiday. It commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from Pakistan in the early hours of 26 March 1971. Independence Day is commonly associated with parades, political speeches, fairs, concerts, ceremonies and various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of Bangladesh. TV and radio stations broadcast special programs and patriotic songs in honor of the Independence Day. Generally, a thirty-one gun salute is conducted in the morning. The main streets are decorated with national flags. Different political parties and socioeconomic organizations undertake programs to mark the day in a befitting manner, including paying respects at National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar near Dhaka.

Nineteen years ago, Iraq was invaded by the USA, the UK, Australia and Poland on March 19, 2003, after the Bush administration announced that “diplomacy has failed” and that it would proceed with a “coalition of the willing” to “disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein’s support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people”.
Prior to this decision, Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State, lied before the UN on February 5, 2003, delivering his infamous speech that was reportedly prepared by Vice President Dick Cheney’s office. Powell falsely claimed that Iraq harbored a terrorist network headed by al-Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (in a small region controlled by Ansar al-Islam). He also claimed that Iraqis visited Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan and provided training to al-Qaeda members, although thousands of Arabs from many countries did the same. Interestingly, the US intelligence agencies had found no evidence of any substantive collaboration between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda.

Viktor Frankl: An Inner Drive to Find a Meaning For Life by Rene Wadlow
Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) whose birth anniversary we mark on 26 March was a leading psychotherapist in the humanistic psychotherapy school. He was born in Vienna into a well-established Jewish family; his father was a director at the Austrian Ministry of Social Affairs. He had n early interest in medicine, especially psychotherapy, the ideas of Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler being hotly debated in the student milieu. He joined the young socialists who were influenced by Alfred Adler’s views that persons were motivated to overcome a negative view of themselves due to class conflicts.
