The Use of Child Soldiers: The Children of Conflict by Rene Wadlow

12 February is the United Nations sponsored International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers.  Efforts to counter the use of persons under 18 years of age in the military began with non-governmental efforts in 1979 – which the U.N. had proclaimed as “The International Year of the Child”.  Nicolas Hulot, who later became well known in France for his reporting on ecology and the defence of the environment, had written “Ces Enfants qui souffrent” (Paris: Sipa-Press, 1978).  He highlighted children dying from malnutrition, disease, and injury caused by wars and natural disasters.  Hulot’s cry of conscience showed children fighting and being trained to fight in a number of countries in different parts of the world.

Concern with the welfare of children has been an inter-governmental concern going back to the League of Nations days.  However, the use of child soldiers was rarely mentioned as the professional military prior to the Second World War had persons over 18, usually the youngest were in their 20s.  However, the German Nazi used very young men in the last days of the war to try to limit the impact of the Allied forces within Germany.  There were a number of films and books which told of their efforts.  However, attention did not carry on once the Nazi forces were defeated.

Books & art, the last stand to authoritarianism? by Thanos Kalamidas

The Greek dictators during their regime that lasted seven years (1967-1974), ban the sale and owning of over 200 books including Jaroslav Hašek’s “The Good Soldier Švejk”, all  Bertolt Brecht’s and Anton Chekhov’s work. Works considered classics and monumental for human history. “The Good Soldier Švejk” was forbidden due to its anti-war message, Bertolt Brecht was socialist and Anton Chekhov Russian. Ethnicity was enough for the dictators to forbidden a book and make reading them punishable.

On 10 May 1933, the students burned upwards of 25,000 volumes of “un-German” books in the square at the State Opera, Berlin, thereby presaging an era of uncompromising state censorship. In many other university towns, nationalist students marched in torch lit parades against the “un-German” spirit. All books from authors with Marxist or Pacifist affiliations, literature with liberal, democratic tendencies and attitudes, like the works of H. G. Wells, Heinrich Mann, Thomas Mann and of course… all Jewish writers.

They whisper,
On the boulevards

In the silence of
The night.”

Asa’s Song: ‘There’s Fire on The Mountain’ by Kola King

Multiple award-winning singer, guitarist, and international music star Bukola Elemide better known as Asa rendered her classic song ‘Fire on the Mountain’ at the unveiling of the new Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in Abuja on July 19, the event, which held at the old banquet hall of the Presidential Villa was witnessed by President Muhammadu Buhari who also doubles as the Minister of Petroleum, as well as the crème de la crème of the oil industry, and of course the movers and shakers of society.

Inside the cozy ambiance of the old banquet hall, Asa sauntered leisurely to the dais dressed in a black flowing gown and spotting a dark google as though she was mourning a nation in the grips of insecurity. As is customary with artists on stage, whereby they genuflect and acknowledge their audience, Asa neither acknowledged nor bowed before the president and other dignitaries present at the occasion, which is a radical departure from the norm. Apparently, her action signified protest. It’s as if she came on a protest mission and not to entertain her guests. Of course, music is an instrument of protest. Anyway, she went straight ahead into business and gave a rendition of her song in her salt and pepper voice. Her song- ‘There’s Fire on the Mountain’ was not a praise song but a dirge to the high-level insecurity that pervades the land. Asa had rendered a song of lamentations.

Dark horizons over Malaysia

In this collection of 34 essays, Teck Ghee and Murray mince no words in examining a protracted crisis that has long bedevilled Malaysia – its twin problems of race and religion.

The authors will be no strangers to Aliran readers. Both have been sharp and hard-hitting social critics.

Teck Ghee, who was my colleague at University Sains Malaysia, had an illustrious academic career, including as professor of the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Malaya. He later served at the World Bank and as policy adviser to the UN.

Ex-aide criticizes Bush over Iraq

Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan has said US President George W Bush was not "open and forthright" on Iraq and rushed to an unnecessary war. In simple language, he ...lied!!!

In a new book, Mr. McClellan says Mr. Bush relied on a "political propaganda campaign" to sell the war. His handling of Hurricane Katrina is also attacked. From July 2003 to his resignation in April 2006, Mr. McClellan was a loyal defender of the Bush administration. In response, a White House spokeswoman said Mr. McClellan was "disgruntled".

Dana Perino added: "For those of us who fully supported him, before, during and after he was press secretary, we are puzzled. It is sad - this is not the Scott we knew." Mr. McClellan was a long-standing member of Mr. Bush's inner circle, having worked for him when he was Texas governor before following him to the White House.

Not much good for history to remember George W. Bush, even the …mice are leaving the boat before sinking to the bottom of …forgetness!

In recently watching Oprah claim that there are many ways to God and not just one, she is in effect saying that there are many paths that lead to God, and that there is more than one way to salvation.
