Thank you, Nancy Pelosi ! by Leah Sellers

Yes, Thank you Speaker Pelosi for reminding All of Us that democracy anywhere and everywhere is important. Let Freedom Ring-a-ling really is your thing. Many remember your ceremonial presence with others after the bloody Braveries of Tiananmen Square took place in the 1980‘s.

Many will remember your present visit to Taiwan despite China’s Authoritarian Bully Boy threats and war mongering monotribes telling you not to come – or else !

China grits its teeth over your Visit with Taiwanese leaders, and its people, with War Tantrums off of Taiwan’s coastline zipping and chugging and lugging their military, adolescent, attention grabbing antics through the oceans and air like a child running through the living room shouting “I’m
Bat Man” in The Joker’s underwear !

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941): The Local and the Universal by Rene Wadlow

In a period of rapid change as we face today, it is often difficult to find the right balance between the cultural contributions and needs of the local, the national, and the universal.  One way of finding this balance is to look at the life and work of others, who earlier confronted the same challenges.  One such person was the poet, writer and cultural reformer Rabindranath Tagore. As Amiya Chakravarty, a literary secretary of Tagore wrote  “Each individual must strike the ‘universal concrete’ in terms of his own creative effort, in the milieu of his own cultural heritage.  Only by proceeding from wherever we are, geographically, spiritually or vocationally, can we make the integral effort for peace.  The peace-workers belong to the entire human family, using the language or religious associations to which he has been born, and which he transforms, not necessarily by revolt but by inner transcendence.” (1)

Rabindranath Tagore  was the Renaissance man of modern India — the bridge from an Indian culture dominated on the one hand by a traditionalism that had long ceased to be creative and on the other by English colonial practice whose reforms were self-interested.  He was known world wide as a poet having received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.  His aim was to combine a renewal of local thought, in particular that of his native Bengal, with an appreciation of the cultures of the world. The motto of the educational center he founded, Visva-Bharati, was “Where the world makes its home in a single nest.”

Asa’s Song: ‘There’s Fire on The Mountain’ by Kola King

Multiple award-winning singer, guitarist, and international music star Bukola Elemide better known as Asa rendered her classic song ‘Fire on the Mountain’ at the unveiling of the new Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in Abuja on July 19, the event, which held at the old banquet hall of the Presidential Villa was witnessed by President Muhammadu Buhari who also doubles as the Minister of Petroleum, as well as the crème de la crème of the oil industry, and of course the movers and shakers of society.

Inside the cozy ambiance of the old banquet hall, Asa sauntered leisurely to the dais dressed in a black flowing gown and spotting a dark google as though she was mourning a nation in the grips of insecurity. As is customary with artists on stage, whereby they genuflect and acknowledge their audience, Asa neither acknowledged nor bowed before the president and other dignitaries present at the occasion, which is a radical departure from the norm. Apparently, her action signified protest. It’s as if she came on a protest mission and not to entertain her guests. Of course, music is an instrument of protest. Anyway, she went straight ahead into business and gave a rendition of her song in her salt and pepper voice. Her song- ‘There’s Fire on the Mountain’ was not a praise song but a dirge to the high-level insecurity that pervades the land. Asa had rendered a song of lamentations.

Dark horizons over Malaysia

In this collection of 34 essays, Teck Ghee and Murray mince no words in examining a protracted crisis that has long bedevilled Malaysia – its twin problems of race and religion.

The authors will be no strangers to Aliran readers. Both have been sharp and hard-hitting social critics.

Teck Ghee, who was my colleague at University Sains Malaysia, had an illustrious academic career, including as professor of the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Malaya. He later served at the World Bank and as policy adviser to the UN.

Wild Flowers, And ‘You’re Not The Boss of Me’ Horses, Sunflowers and U-Necked Cranes by Leah Sellers

“Mama ! Mama ! Uncle E.L. and I drove by a Hysterical Cemetery when he took me fishin’ today !”

“Excuse me ?” Cheyenne’s Mama queried as she hugged her returning precocious seven year old.

“You know, Mama, a Hysterical Cemetery. You’re always pointing’ them out to me when we’re travelin’ around in the car.”

“Honey, the Cemeteries I point out to you are Historical, not Hysterical.”

“Oh, I got the word wrong. That’s why Uncle E.L. laughed at me !”

Cheyenne’s Mama chuckled. “More than likely, Baby.”

“I’m glad to know that, ‘cause I thought he was bein’ rude to all of the Dead People, and you’re always telling’ me that must Respect and Honor our Dead.”

The United Nations Peacekeeping Forces, Weak but Necessary by Rene Wadlow

29 May is the International Day of the United Nations Peacekeepers. The day was chosen in memory of the creation of the first UN interposition force in the Middle East. In the years since, 3,800 have lost their lives. Today there are 14 operations. The most difficult are in Africa where there has been large scale breakdown of State structures such as the Central African Republic, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The deployment of U.N. peace-keeping forces is only one aspect of conflict resolution and peace building.  However U.N. peace-keeping forces are the most visible (and expensive) aspect of the U.N. peace-building efforts. Thus our attention must be justly given to the role, the financing, and the practice of U.N. peace-keeping forces.

Erich Fromm: Meeting the Challenges of the Century by Rene Wadlow

Eric Fromm (1900-1980), the psychoanalyst concerned with the relation between personality and society, whose birth anniversary we mark on 23 March, was born in 1900.  Thus his life was marked by the socio-political events of the century he faced, especially those of Germany, his birth place.

Erich Fromm was born into an orthodox Jewish family in Frankfurt am Main.  The families of both his mother and father had rabbis and Talmudic scholars, and so he grew up in a household where the significance of religious texts was an important part of life. While Fromm later took a great distance from Orthodox Jewish thought, he continued a critical appreciation of Judaism.

This delicious invention, meatballs, has been documented in culinary records many times throughout history. How’s Mercy Coming Along ? by Leah Sellers

“Hey, Maybelle ? Are you fussin’ around in the Chicken Coop, Hon ?” Sam asked as ducked to enter the large Chicken House he’d built for Maybelle when they had moved out to the Country years ago.

“Yes, Sam. Come on in. I was just checkin’ up on Mercy, before callin’ it a day. She and the new Rhode Island Red, Smarty Pants, got into it today, and they both lost a few feathers establishin’ hen peckin’ territory. They’re both a little worse for the wear, but no real damages done to either Hen,” Maybelle explained as she coddled Maybelle in her arms.
“Who names these chickens anyways ?” Sam asked with a grin.
“I do or the kids, but you know that,” Maybelle retorted returning his sarcasm with a grin of her own.

Biden’s Build Back Better Adversaries and Adversities by Leah Sellers

If you live in Texas where the Texas legislature is continuing to take away Women’s Rights regarding their Decisions for their Bodies and their Lives while they also create Laws which will allow it to be easier and quicker for the Folks of Texas (and Folks from who knows where else) to buy Guns for the Aborting of Fully Incubated Humans by Unlicensed, Uncertified, and Untrained other Fully Incubated Humans with Guns, and thusly the Profiteers of Gun Running.

If you visit Texas, y’all will also notice that the Confederate Rebel Flags have been set aside and substituted for the Autocratic Trumpian Flags flippin’ and flappin’ off our American democracy at the Gateways of many Texas Ranches, Farms and Residences, while large, loud pick-up trucks with AR-14 Guns in their back window Gun wracks, also displaying the Autocratic Trumpian Flags, roar, rumble and grumble down Texas highways and byways with Trumpian Talibanish pride ! Yee-ha-ha-ha-ha !
