Sportswashed: Ronaldo heads to Saudi Arabia by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

It just keeps getting darker and darker.  For the professionally ignorant, things are only getting better.  With one of history’s great events of sportswashing concluded – the 2022 Qatar World Cup – another state famed for its cosmetic distractions and moneyed seductions made a splash.  Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, his sun setting and his prospects diminishing among Europe’s top clubs, was signed to play in Saudi Arabia.

He had been seething and fuming at Manchester United, increasingly cast into peripheral, bench warming roles.  The inner truculent brat screamed and found a voice on the ever humbly named show Piers Morgan Uncensored.  In a conversation between brats who felt they had been mistreated over the years, the impression given by Ronaldo was always going to be a love of the game over cash.

“Is it also that you want to keep playing at the highest level?  That you want to play Champions League football, you want to keep breaking records?” asked Morgan.  In the manner of a ghost writer mulling over the bleedingly obvious, Morgan persisted.  “Again, it comes back to my gut feeling about you that, if it was just about the money, you’d be in Saudi Arabia earning this king’s ransom.  But that’s not what motivates you, you want to keep at the top…”

Informing Pattern #poem by Jan Sand

“Words first arrived on cave walls in France and Spain,
Shaped as animals, aurochs and deer.
Symbolic prey, sorceries of hunt. It is presumed
Those dark halls echoed speech to resound, invoke
That magic imagery to permit it to be spoken.
The skills to inscribe a graceful line can be rare.
But a tone pronounced, a whistle or a hiss, a soft scream
To modulate into a pictured dream
Is easier to represent with a scribbled line or two.
Thus, alphabets appeared, or so it seems.”

Scottish, not British, football hooligan minority

Police in Manchester have released CCTV images showing up to 200 football fans chasing officers and attacking one of them after the Uefa Cup final.

The footage also shows Glasgow Rangers fans tripping up a Greater Manchester police officer and jumping on him after the match with Zenit St Petersburg. Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran described the fans as being "like a pack of baying wolves".

Firstly, let's make sure that the press distinguishes between the nationality of these despicable Scottish fans that insisted on marring the name of British football.

Secondly, let's also remember that 200 out of 100,000 visiting Scottish fans scars the reputation of Scottish football.

A round of applause for the 200 idiots.

Man Utd 1-0 Roma

Carlos Tevez struck as Manchester United defeated Roma to seal a Champions League semi-final match-up with Barcelona.

Roma should have taken the lead from the penalty spot after a foul by Wes Brown but Daniele de Rossi smashed the ball high over the crossbar. Edwin van der Sar denied Mirko Vucinic as Roma threatened but Ryan Giggs and Owen Hargreaves forced saves from Doni. And Tevez scored with a diving header from Hargreaves' cross to seal the tie.

And now all the way to the final!
