THE FLYING MARINER by David Sparenberg
Odysseus, the sailor, flew high with birds and into the clouds. The polis dwellers of Ithaka thought the sea tested voyager’s aerial acrobatics proof of senility, if not signs of Dionysiac madness.
But the flying mariner had learned the art of weaving from his patient and faithful Penelope.
Little did the watchers on the ground recognize that the King, in returning to the mythopoeic playfulness of childhood, held a silver needle and ball of golden threat in his soul and in his hands. With these tools of ageless magic, the shaman Odysseus was once more sewing rift and wound, and stitching Heaven and Earth back together.
