Ovi magazine; Thursday March 10th, 2022 – National Mario Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Thursday March 10th, 2022 – National Mario Day

National Mario Day came about when it was noticed that, when writing out the day Mar.10, it just happens to spell out the name, “Mario”. From that point forward, the day just seemed to take off!

The character of Mario was first introduced in Nintendo’s game Donkey Kong. He didn’t even have his own feature game right away! When he originally appeared in this game in the early 1980’s Mario was not the plumber that would be recognized today. In fact, in the early days his name was simply “Mr. Jumpman” and he was a carpenter.

#Malaysia’s Looming Food Crisis – The government is part of the problem by Murray Hunter

The shortage of McDonald’s French fries earlier this month in Malaysia is symbolic of a much bigger national problem. Many food items are in short supply and subject to rapidly rising prices. Many local producers have been ravished by flood, or ceased production due to production costs rising above permitted selling prices set by the Domestic Trade Ministry, while many consumers are facing financial difficulties and struggling to purchase their household food needs. The market prices of many vegetables have risen 200 percent over the last six months, while some wet markets and supermarkets have been without eggs and chicken meat stocks.

This is likely to be exasperated with the beginning of Ramadan, Muslim fasting month on 1st April, where food consumption actually counter-intuitively rises. In the short-term, the invasion of Ukraine has sent oil prices well over US $100 per barrel, which will lead to higher input and freight costs.

Nairobi food protests

Kenyan police have fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of people demonstrating against the soaring cost of food.

Protesters in the capital Nairobi carried placards demanding the government cut the cost of basic Kenyan staples like maize flour. The police said the demonstration was illegal and four arrests were made.

Food prices in the east African country have risen sharply since the recent political crisis led to shortages. December's disputed presidential election triggered violence across Kenya, leaving 1,500 people dead and some 600,000 people displaced.

Let’s wait, we might see food clashes all around the world with the speed oil prices increase!

Food crisis talks begin

Envoys from 26 Latin American and Caribbean countries meet on Friday to discuss the rising cost of food and draw up a united policy for the region.

The talks in Caracas, Venezuela, mark the beginning of a week of meetings on the issue, leading up to a three-day UN food crisis summit in Rome on Tuesday. According to the World Bank, global food prices have risen by 83% over the past three years. The lender has announced a package of food grants totaling $1.2bn.

An influential report on Thursday warned that higher food prices might be here to stay as demand from developing countries and production costs rose. Prices would fall, but only gradually, the report by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said.

They are missing the point once more; there is NO TIME FOR TALK! People are starving to death!

UN's food agency a waste of money

An African leader has dismissed the UN's food agency as a "waste of money" and called for it to be scrapped.

President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal spoke out days after the UN announced an emergency plan to bring soaring world food prices under control. Mr. Wade said the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was itself largely to blame for the price rises.

His comments came as bakers in Nigeria began a week-long national strike in protest at the cost of flour and sugar. Some global food prices have nearly doubled in the past three years, provoking riots and other protests in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

A bitter truth coming from the one who lives the problem?

Food crisis

Key United Nations development agencies are meeting in Switzerland to try to develop solutions to ease the escalating global food crisis.

Led by secretary general Ban Ki-Moon, officials want to mitigate the impact of the steep rise in staple food prices and prevent food shortages worsening. The World Food Programme (WFP) has said an extra 100 million people need food aid because of higher prices. Food has become increasingly expensive, triggering unrest in several countries.

Ki-moon is waking up and somebody told him that people are hungry and it is UN obligation to do something!!!
