A Matter of Personal Hospitality: Buying the US Supreme Court by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

What is going to be done with Clarence Thomas, that darling reactionary among reactionaries on the US Supreme Court?  Evidently, the justice seems to assume that being bribed, paid off or bought by a billionaire over the course of 20 years is a perfectly appropriate practice, reconcilable with the role of his office in handing down judgments affecting the lives of millions.

A ProPublica investigation has found that the Supreme Court justice received gifts fromthe billionaire real estate magnate and Republican donor Harlan Crow for two decades.  It opens with a description of one of those gifts: flying on a Bombardier Global 5000 jet to Indonesia, wife Virginia “Ginni” Thomas in tow; nine days of island hopping across the archipelago on a fully staffed superyacht – all for the splendid value of $500,000.

As the investigation points out, the failure to disclose such travel and resort stints would seem to violate the post-Watergate law requiring justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts.  For Crow, as outlined in a statement, this was all a case of extended “hospitality”, something which Thomas had never sought.  It was “no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends.”  That’s influence for you.

UnMa(u)sked by Thanos Kalamidas

In the near future, will come a day when Trump’s rise and fall will be taught in colleges and universities – if it hasn’t already started – and it will be taught in connection with contemporary social media. Donald Trump for more than a decade master manipulated social media to the point that he was awarded supreme power in the most powerful nation on earth and control over the rue of history.

However, whilst social media undoubtedly helped his rise, they also are partly responsible for his fall and this is a lesson contemporary Tramps don’t seem to learn; Elon Musk to name the major one.

Elon Musk masked his political affiliations and ambitions for long time with his quirky/uncomfortable/unfunny humour in odd tweets that made only for Trump to like and smirk – taking in account that the orange man is incapable to smile. But masked or not reality was there and the day Trump became president of USA, masks fallen and we all saw what really Elon Musk wants ambitions, dreams, his ultimate aim and that was/is to become …Donald Trump in the place of Donald Trump.

Ovi magazine; Saturday October 22nd, 2022 – International Stuttering Awareness Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Saturday October 22nd, 2022 – International Stuttering Awareness Day

Stuttering has been the subject of interest of many physicians over the millennia, with one of the most famous stutterers being prominent Ancient Greek statesman and Demosthenes. Demosthenes, who lived in the 4th century BC, could not speak without stuttering and was often mocked by his peers, causing him to become determined to get his condition under control, especially since he was an extremely intelligent man who had plenty to say about Athens’ political situation. One of the tactics he used was to practice speaking loud enough to be heard over the waves with pebbles in his mouth, and after much hard work, he succeeded. Other famous people who have had to deal their stutter include the Roman Emperor Claudius, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, and James Earl Jones, whose voice the world knows as that of Darth Vader himself.

Power dance with corruption by Thanos Kalamidas

It was last week’s Trump family corruption news and obviously neither the first nor the last. “The Trump Organization appears to have overcharged the Secret Service for stays at Trump-owned properties by agents protecting the then-president. The charges exceeded the government’s approved rate, according to the House Oversight Committee, which says Secret Service records show payments totalling over $1.4 million.”

After everything we read and heard the last six years there is no surprise here and while rumours have it that in reality Donald Trump has bankrupt his family long ego, living in borrowed money, fact is that the Trump family made some serious money during and after his presidency. The not-paid advisors, Ivanka Trump, Donald’s daughter and her husband Jared Kushner for the year 2020 – last year of Donald’s presidency – added to their bank accounts a combined 800 million dollars. Nearly one billion for doing …not-paid advising!

Sadly, Donald Trump is not an exception where power dances with corruption. This is a very old dance, even ancient and Donald is just the contemporary one, on the news all the time with constant new information and the brightest of all for now. Especially authoritarian figures seem to specialize in the sport power and corruption. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and of course the Russian president Vladimir Putin, stage the best examples of president Donald Trump contemporaries in power and corruption.

#Nigeria – 1960-2022: The Unresolved Leadership Question by Kola King

Nigeria’s independence was ushered in with fanfare, pomp and ceremony on October 1, 1960. The Union Jack was lowered, and Nigeria’s flag hoisted at full mast, marking the end of British colonial rule and the beginning of self-government and independence. By 1963 the nation had thrown off the yoke of British dominion when it voted to be a republic and no longer under the British monarchy. Naturally, the cast of actors in the independence struggle later emerged as the new leaders of the new nation. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa of the Northern Peoples Congress emerged the first prime minister of independent Nigeria, while Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was installed as Governor General of the federation.

Nigeria held so much hope and promise at independence not only for the nation but Africa as a whole. Even though a multicultural and multi ethnic and multi religious society there was every hope that the leaders of independence would get things right and forge ahead to instill the spirit of nationalism and set the nation on the path of irreversible progress, development and prosperity.

Ovi magazine; Tuesday October 4th, 2022 – Cinnamon Roll Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Tuesday October 4th, 2022 – Cinnamon Roll Day

Cinnamon rolls are believed to have found their origin in Europe after the arrival of cinnamon to the continent. The rolls started to become popular in the country of Sweden during the early years of the 20th century. It seems that some time in the 1920s, after World War I, the people of Sweden were again able to afford luxury items like spices, including cinnamon.

Competition and frictions within the Malaysian Deep State by Murray Hunter

There is some belief that the so-called deep state is responsible for many predetermined acts in Malaysia. Some believe that the abduction and disappearance of Amri Che Mat and Pastor Raymond Koh were acts undertaken by elements within the deep state. Likewise, the acquittal of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of corruption charges, Abdul Azeez being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, and Bung Moktar and his wife given a stay from entering a defence on charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), all on the same day raised conjecture deep state forces were at play.

There is a belief that the deep state is a united homogenous entity which influences the running of government, and policy decisions, with some unity of purpose.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Greece, the evolution of authoritarian Trumpism in Europe by Thanos Kalamidas

Following Donald Trump’s blueprint for a democratically elected corrupted totalitarian, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis, admitted his administration’s wrong doing with the phone tapping of an opposition leader but denied any personal knowledge. Immediately after he ‘resigned’ his adviser, responsible for the national security, the phone tapping and another …family member of his in the Greek government.

In the meantime most of the well-bribed from the government Greek media and the government’s propagandists, including ministers and MPs, tried to persuade the Greek people that the phone tapping was legal and part of the job while using gossip-press and social media to throw mud over the personal life of the opposition leader they were tapping as part of the …reasoning.

Odd thing here, with his party holding the parliamentarian majority the last two years, Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis, can make even phone-tapping the opposition and journalists legal. Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis managed to succeed where Richard Nixon failed.

The Sulu Arbitration Scam – The biggest attempted fraud case against Malaysia ever perpetrated by Murray Hunter

Can you imagine what would be the consequences if a rogue freelance lawyer misused the good offices of the Malaysian courts and awarded USD 15 billion against Spain or France in an arbitration hearing, without either country participating?

This is what happened to Malaysia in what could be called the most elaborate international legal scam ever perpetrated.

Malaysia has fallen victim to a scheme by developed by arogue lawyer Gonzalo Stampa, in a scheme to extort Malaysia. Stampa used the offices of both the Spanish and French courts of law to enact his arbitration charade, clearly without legal authority and sanction, and clearly without jurisdiction.

Malaysia’s Corruption Pandemic by Murray Hunter

Recently, the Minister for Islamic Affairs within the Prime Minister’s Department Idris Ahmad reprimanded those who criticized the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) for being slow and inefficient in dealing with allegations of corruption.

Idris went onto say that those who criticised JAKIM were committing a sin, inferring anybody criticizing government, political, and administrative leaders were themselves sinners for demeaning the reputation of government institutions.

Such is the sorry state of integrity, when whistle blowers are declared the sinners.

In the 2021 Transparency International Global Corruption Index, Malaysia ranked 62 out of 180 countries, down 3 positions from 2020. According to the Global Corruption Barometer, 71% of local people believed government corruption was a big problem, while 13% of public services users declared they had paid a bribe over the previous 12 months.

Abandoning the Sinking Rat: Boris Johnson Resigns by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

Like the political equivalent of a cockroach, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived and endured one strike after another.  His credibility was shot, his mendacity second to none.  He lost the confidence of a party that delighted in his buffoonish performances and appeal.  Fearing electoral punishment, senior ministers and aides have left his side.  Labour opposition leader, Sir Keir Starmer, found himself making a witticism, calling this the first instance in history of the ship leaving the sinking rat.

No chronology on this would be sufficient.  But the recent turn of events has been something verging on spectacular.  There was partygate, which demonstrated the fullness of contempt shown by the Prime Minister and his staff to their constituents.  In April, he was fined for breaking his government’s own lockdown rules, having attended a gathering for his birthday in June 2020.  He also apologised for attending a “bring your own booze” party held in the Downing Street garden held during the first lockdown.  Despite showing some contrition, he believed, for the most part, that he had been following the rules and operating within them.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a corruption tragedy by choice by Thanos Kalamidas

It feels like there is a curse laid upon Greece; every time this historic democracy takes a breathe of hope something new comes to destroy all and remind us how fragile democracy can be. In fact this fall is what Greece lives nowadays and under the ruling of an absolutely corrupted, populist and far-right Prime Minister, Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis.

The decade 2009-2019 was a nightmarish era for the Greek people. They found themselves in a bankrupted country, their income diving almost 40% down and all public sector in ruins. They felt that while the earth kept going around, evaluating and improving, Greece was falling backwards into past miserable post WWII decades of poverty and hunger. Poverty reached more than 60% of the population whilst more than 40,000 Greeks found themselves living in the streets, homeless and powerless with bank and money-sharks surrounding them from every side trying to get a piece even from the Greek historic and national sovereignty.

Sadly this was not the first time Greece fell into this short of abyss. Greece was founded as a sovereign and independent nation on May 1, 1827, during the Fourth National Assembly, held in Troezen. In just four years time after, a nation still in war with the Ottoman Empire, declared bankruptcy for loans taken from the British Empire. At least that time there was an understandable and solid excuse; war.

JAKIM’s undesirable impact on Malaysian politics and society by Murray Hunter

After three years of accusations over the lack of halal integrity and corruption within Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM), a number of very concerning issues regarding the political environment and society have been exposed. These issues need to be identified and discussed. The purpose of this article is list these issues and make some preliminary observations, so they can be discussed within the public domain.

JAKIM is not a divine religious organization

JAKIM is part of the Malaysian bureaucracy housed under the authority of the Prime Minister’s Department, and under supervision of the Council of Rulers. JAKIM is staffed by civil servants. There is nothing about divinity and altruism within JAKIM’s mission, other than to promote state influence within Islam and related issues.

As such, civil servants who pursue a career within JAKIM share the same ambitions as civil servants in other ministries and agencies. They want promotion, pursue self-interest, and participate in internal politics. Consequently, JAKIM is not immune from corruption.

Morbid Matters: Estimating COVID-19 Mortality by Dr. Binoy Kampmark

It has dominated news cycles, debates and policies since 2020, but COVID-19 continues to exercise the interest of number crunchers and talliers.  While the ghoulish daily press announcements about infections and deaths across many a country have diminished and, in some cases, disappeared altogether, publications abound about how many were taken in the pandemic.

The World Health Organization, ever that herald of dark news, has offered a revised assessment across of the SARS-CoV-2 death toll associated either directly or indirectly with the pandemic.  Between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, the global health body suggests that the mortality figure is closer to 14.9 million, with a range of 13.3 million to 16.6 million.

Buhari’s anti-corruption war: promises made, promises broken by Kola King

The recent presidential pardon granted to former Plateau State governor Senator Joshua Dariye and Reverend Jolly Nyame of Taraba State by the Council of State, based on the recommendations from the Presidential Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy appears to have finally nailed the coffin of the anti-corruption war. The state pardon anchored on compassionate grounds and on ill-health has called into question the sincerity of the Buhari administration in fighting corruption. If anything, it has brought to the fore the lack of political will to fight corruption.

Still, it is a widely acknowledged fact that corruption has hobbled the nation and almost brought it to its knees. Little wonder Nigeria is gradually being turned into a metaverse of corruption. Through this action, the Buhari administration has seemingly poured cold war into the smouldering fire of anti-graft war. This action calls for introspection on the issues of morality and legality. In some respects, the government’s action was backed by the law, but then it falls short of public morality.

Wednesday, March 2

Ovi magazine; Wednesday March 2nd, 2022 – Dr. Seuss Day

The articles, the opinions, the stories, the poems and the cartoons Ovi magazine covers for Wednesday March 2nd, 2022 – Dr. Seuss Day

Theodor Seuss Geisel, commonly known by his pen name Dr. Seuss, was a writer, poet and cartoonist. Though best known as a children’s author (he released a whopping forty-six books for tykes), his career also saw him work as an illustrator for advertising campaigns and a political cartoonist during the Second World War. He was also a true perfectionist, known to discard 95% of his material before settling on a theme for a new book, sometimes spending up to a year writing a single story, and preferring payment upon completion, rather than in advance.

March 2nd is a celebration of his life and works, as it was on this day in 1904 that he entered the world. Having lived eighty-seven years and made an incredible impact on numerous generations, he died in 1991 at his home in La Jolla, California. His many bizarre, colourful and zany tales are still cherished by young and old alike, and, having been translated into more than twenty languages, are read all across the world every single day.

The Preamble of United Nations Charter states:

“WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom

He was the epitome of efficiency and effectiveness. No matter the complexity of the case, once Kyari was drafted to handle any such case, he would within a short time crack it and bring the culprits to heel. He had resolved many crime cases ranging from kidnapping to armed robbery that had defied the routine police investigations. He was a super cop who had the Midas touch. Little wonder the House of Representatives awarded him a special honour in recognition of his crime-busting exploits.
