‘Lord of the Rings’: Chapter Two by Rene Wadlow

On 26 December 2022, in Saint-Petersburg, the Russian Federation President, Vladimir Poutine, hosted an informal summit of his close allies of the former Soviet Union republics – the Community of Independent States: Azerbaidjan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kirghizistan, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.  To each of the eight presidents, he gave a ring with the word “Russia” engraved.  He kept the 9th ring for himself.

It did not take long for the social media to call up images of the 9 rings in the “Lord of the Rings” series written in the mid 1950s by the British Oxford professor of medieval literature John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, most often called just J.R.R. Tolkien.

In the “Lord of the Rings”, the rings are forged in a volcano in the dangerous land of Mordor by the evil lord Sauron. The rings come under the control of Gollum who himself comes to be the slave of the rings.  Gollum becomes less and less visible, but is always there in the background.  The plot of the stories is the effort to return the rings to the volcano where they will be remelted, their power destroyed.
