Rainbow Street – Part 4 #shortstory #fiction by Richard Stanford

As soon as we turned the corner onto Rainbow Street we knew something was up.  Mrs. Schlott was in front of our house talking with a couple of neighbours.  When Nora pulled into the driveway, Mrs. Schlott came running to me as I stepped out of the car.

“Do you know where Niki is?” she said pleadingly. Nora told her we had been away all day and I had no idea. “He left on his bike a few hours ago and he hasn’t come home.  I’ve looked everywhere.”

Niki had been given a bicycle and over the summer he had travelled the neighbourhood including the harbour and dockyards.  One day I had seen him in the farmers market.  He often waved at me as he went by with a, “See y’a later.”  Getting away from his house and exploring was a full time job.

“My husband is at work and I can’t walk much more,” said Mrs. Schlott now almost in tears.
