The one-party system of the SLPP-APC coalition: fetus in fetu or Siamese twins? by Dr Saidu Bangura

Fetus in fetu is as rare an occurrence as it is an inferno. This human developmental abnormality occurs when a fetus is formed inside the body of its twin. The fetus in fetu begins as a normal fetus but is encased inside its twin.It can equally be considered as a highly developed tumor. It is aparasitic, deadly, diabolical, andcontroversialbiological condition; a condition that shows a fetus living inside an adult, and in some cases inside a child: a twin or twins’fetus-like structure living inside another person or twin outside of its natural habitat, the placenta. This brainless and dependent fetus lives and survives inside the host twin. The adult male person carrying the fetus-like structure feels pain and the normal disturbing sensationsof a pregnancy. Fetus in fetu was first mentioned in the 1809 work of George William Young: “Case of a Fœtus found in the Abdomen of a Boy”.

According tothe Merriam-Websteronline dictionary (accessed August 15, 2022), Siamese twins, are “one of a pair of congenitally united twins”. This is another rare biological occurrence in which twins are joined by a single fertilized egg that does not completely split (a process known as “fission”) during the formation of the twins or a “fusion” of two fertilized eggs which takes place during the earlier stages of the development of the twins. Siamese twins had its origin from the world’s famous Siam (now Thailand) twins, Chang and Eng Bunker, who lived from 1811 to 1874.Conjoined or Siamese twins share a single chorion, placenta, and amniotic sac. Siamese twins can be separated at birth or later. Siamese twins are mostly females.

“You are like a stoic carrying a vision;  aversion to extravagance,
Your leaves are woven by your thoughts, contrary to what the wind harbors.
 No one lingered,
It is not from a branch that imitates the other or is jealous of it;”

Edward Carpenter and the Healing of Nations by Rene Wadlow

Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) whose birth anniversary we note on 29 August, was an English writer, educator and pacifist, socialist reformer. Carpenter came from a middle class intellectual family and studied at Cambridge University. As with some of his fellow students who were interested in philosophy and ideas, he was ordained in the Church of England hoping that its outlook and theology could be widened from the inside.  However, once inside, he realized that the broadening goal would take a long time.  Thus by 1874 he left the church for a new field − university extension courses − a program of night school education for the “working classes”.

Just as he was about to become a Church of England cleric in 1869, he discovered the poems of Walt Whitman which became the inspiration for his own poems as well as for an opening to a cosmic consciousness that Whitman manifested. As Carpenter wrote in Angels’ Wings “Whitman’s verse in its most successful passages, so magnificent in its effects, so democratic in feeling, so democratic in form, is more absolute in expression, more real in its content, burns brighter in the nearness of sunrise, and yet lies so near along to Nature and the innocent naivety of speech of a child, that some people are inclined to deny to it the quality of Art at all!” Whitman was his life-long model, and Carpenter spent time in the USA to be with Whitman, an experience which he recorded in a book Days with Walt Whitman.
