Minimum wages should be raised to keep pace with inflation by Dr Mohd Shahidan Shaari
The trend in minimum wages exhibits a steady increase in Malaysia. In 2015, the minimum wage stood at RM900 and increased to RM1,000 for the next 3 years. It continued to go up to RM1,100 in 2019, and now the minimum wage in Malaysia is RM1,200. However, it is considered to be low and not commensurate with the current cost of living.
Although there is no minimum wage in other countries, such as Brunei, due to the fact that households’ income in those countries is up to par, which does not merit any government intervention, the imposition of minimum wages in Malaysia is of utmost importance to safeguard the welfare of employees. Otherwise, employers may offer low pay to employees, although they deserve high pay.
