Insurmountable challenges ahead for a new Thai government by Murray Hunter

One week after the May 14 election, the members of the Prayut-Chan-O-Cha government are carrying on business, as if nothing happened. The young Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat is trying to assemble a coalition and support from the senate that will give him the 376 votes necessary to elect him prime minister. 

In Thailand, the PM is not the person who commands the majority of seats in the lower house. The vote for prime minister is undertaken from a bicameral vote of both the lower house and 250 member senate. Currently Pita has support from 314 MPs designate in the 500 member lower house. That means Pita will have to win over 64 senators from the military appointed senate to acquire enough votes to become Thailand’s next prime minister. The only other alternative is for Pita to gain the support of AnutinCharnvirakul’sBhumjaithai Party, and retain Anutin as a deputy prime minister. This is something MFP supporters and Pheu Thai wouldn’t accept.

The probability of gaining the support of 64 senators would be an unprecedented shift in support away from the establishment and military towards the people. One might even include royalty. Any senator who voted for a prime ministerial candidate with the abolishment of Section 112 on the government platform, would face consequences.

Under such circumstances, the present government combining Bhumjaithai Party (70), PalangPracharath Party (40), United Thai Nation Party (25), Democrat Party (25), and the Charttaipattana Party (10), have 181 seats and with the support of the senate, would have 431 votes for their prime ministerial candidate. There is a possibility that Anutin, who has very close ties with the royal family, military, and the elite business families in Thailand, may rise as a potential compromise candidate.

When the memory fades by Amir Khatib

Once I somehow tried to define homeland. Homeland is the tenderness our mothers gave us; it is the cold winter next to the warm stove and a cup tea waiting to go to school, it is running and playing with friends, it is that cart at the school door with the good seller who packs eggs and vegetables in bread and give them to us with a smile.

Homeland is all the memories of childhood.

And it is all the memories collected and stuffed in our head with or without our will. It is memories inserted to our conscious or unconscious from time to time and we do retrieve them, reflect the joyful moments more often than the painful ones. We bring back the rectangle of the contemplation in the buildings, the faces and events that passed and have solidified or calcified us; that have become thin layers of us that sometimes are difficult to browse through.

Among those memories, Yassin Ghaleb clutches and carries them with sincerity, joy and burdened. He carries them on all his long personal life journeys, a life that took him to the farthest point in the north of this earth.

EU-MAN’s Permanent Gallery - St. Petersburg days in Helsinki

The European Union Migrant Artists Network (EU-MAN) cordially invites you to attend the grand opening of the permanent EU-MAN Gallery in Helsinki’s Cable Factory on Tuesday April 14th. Since the launch of EU-MAN in January 1997 there have been countless exhibitions in many countries displaying a huge variety of artworks created by the Network’s many active members, but this is the first time that a permanent exhibition has been established and it is an exciting prospect for everybody involved.

As a special part of this first exhibition, there will be a celebration of 200 years of relations between Finland and Russia. EU-MAN is participating in the “St. Petersburg days in Helsinki” event with a painting exhibition that includes works from 13 Russian artists and five artists that are members of EU-MAN in Finland. The certain exhibit will be open between the 14th and 24th of April.

The gallery’s opening and the exhibition is going to be attanted by Mr. Goubankov Anton Nikolaevich, Chairman of Culture committee of SPB and Mrs. Larisa Skobkina Curator, Chief of the Department of the newest currents of the Central exhibition hall of St. Petersburg “Manege”, so you have the opportunity to meet and talk with them.

So please join us as the 12 year-old EU-MAN organisation celebrates another first and is finally able to display an impressive selection of its members’ work.
