China-Afghanistan: Active on Two Fronts by Rene Wadlow
Mid-June Beijing hosted the first-ever tripartite security discussion among representatives of China, Pakistan, and Iran. There were economic as well as security dimensions to these discussions which take place as part of China’s growing influence – what President Xi Jinping calls “Global Development, Global Security, Global Civilization.”
The political and economic conditions in Afghanistan were the principle motivation for this exceptional meeting. There have been recent border skirmishes between Iran and Afghanistan largely based on old disputers over water use. However, despite the control of Afghanistan by the Taliban, there are still incidents of terrorism carried out by the Afghan sections of Asian-based jihadist groups which cross international frontiers. There is also a small but continuing refugee flow from Afghanistan to Pakistan and Iran.
