Mongolia: A Cold Cloudy Sky. What Next? by Rene Wadlow

The recent manifestation in front of the government buildings in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia have not received the media attention that the protests in Iran or China have received.  However, the protests in Mongolia may have strong consequences and merit being watched.

Mongolia is an independent state of some three and a half million people – ethnically related to Inner Mongolia within the People’s Republic of China.  Most of Mongolia’s exports go to China, especially coal used in making steel.  Mongolia is part of the Chinese Belt and Road initiative and is also on the road of the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline which is to take gas from the Russian arctic region to eastern China.  The Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh has recently been twice to Beijing for talks – an indication of the close economic and political ties.  Thus, the Mongolian protests are sure to be closely watched by the Chinese authorities.
